In my many years delivering babies, I’ve stood in moments no one prepares you for: 💔 Arms bloodied to the elbows trying to stop a hemorrhage 💔 The sound of blood hitting the hospital floor like a faucet left on 💔 A mother’s wail after a stillbirth, echoing in my mind long after I’ve left the room 💔 Delivering a baby while CPR is in progress — the eerie stillness of a bloodless c-section 💔 *Moving* *from* *a* *patient* *hiding* *her* *face* *from* *an* *unwanted* *pregnancy* … *immediately* *to* *another* *devastated* *by* *a* *very* *wanted* *one* *she’ll* *never* *hold* (this is one of those scenarios that make me sad 😢) These experiences leave a mark. 🗣️Of course, we focus on our patients’ difficult experiences — and we should. But there’s also a name for what clinicians go through in these moments: Second Victim Syndrome. 🗣️It’s the emotional trauma we carry after an adverse event — guilt, grief, self-doubt. And many Drs,Clinical officers, nurses, and midwives are silently holding the weight of birth trauma they couldn’t prevent. 🗣️This work is beautiful. But it can also be brutal. Holding space for both is part of reclaiming humanity in hospital birth — for everyone in the room. 🧐Let’s normalize talking about the emotional cost of this calling.
