Humbled and honored to participate in the launch of the Global #Cancer Financing Platform at @bloomberg on the margins of the @UN General Assembly.
Grateful to my colleague and dear friend @DrCatharineY and @ASCO for their steadfast leadership in pulling this group together, keeping the momentum going and pushing forward to making the Global Cancer Financing Platform a reality in order to address the dire financing gap for early cancer diagnosis and treatment, especially in Low- to Lower-Middle Income Countries around the world.
When I served as the @WorldBank Executive Director for the United States, I worked to shore up the Bank’s commitments for cancer in Africa and the Indopacific; supported funding efforts to eliminate cervical cancer at-large; and helped relaunch and take the #CancerMoonshot global. Prior to that, I served as an advisor to the @BidenCancer Initiative and on the @MiamiCancerInst Council at @BaptistHealthSF.
But what drew me to this cause - like so many of us - is deeply personal: I lost my mom to pancreatic cancer 10 years ago.
And like so many, it’s what has driven me to try to turn pain into purpose - and work towards helping #endcancer as we know it.
We all know why cancer cannot wait; the question now is how to finance what works - and how to scale it? This is not about duplicating or competing with existing funds and strategies. It’s about building a financing engine for the future - one that complements what already exists and bridges the gaps.
Transparency must be at the center of everything that we do - every contributor, from multilateral organizations to governments, philanthropies to diaspora communities, should be able to trace resources from commitment to clinic.
The current funding environment is challenging - but the need is greater than ever before. That’s why the time is now for out-of-the-box thinking and to be creative — to use innovative financing mechanisms like blended finance, dormant assets, remittances, and catalytic capital to help address the funding gaps.
This platform must be fit-for-purpose: credible, inclusive, and accountable. And with the individuals that have been a part of this process - and the ample expertise we bring to the table, I am extremely bullish on what is possible if we bring all resources to bear to mobilize $1 billion by 2030 and, most importantly, shift cancer care from late to early.
