Last week, on the night of my birthday, my mother passed away peacefully in her sleep. My mom lived a truly full and remarkable life. Born in Poland, her family moved to Israel and later to the United States. She eventually returned to Israel to fulfill her mandatory service in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). Afterward, she built a life defined by hard work and resilience. She worked as a server, then opened a bakery where she produced cookies for local businesses and catered events. Eventually, she opened a cookie shop in Simi Valley, CA, aptly named the Gookie Cookie Company. My father passed away in 2005, leaving behind a legacy of his own. My mom’s legacy is nothing short of extraordinary. Her family was nearly wiped out during the Holocaust, but my grandfather managed to survive. Through her strength and perseverance, she brought two sons into the world: my brother, who I truly believe is the greatest man to ever walk this earth, and me. Together, we’ve carried forward her resilience. My brother has two incredible children, and I have my three amazing kids, who many of you know all about. The greatest lesson my mom taught me was that hard work always wins. I’ll never forget the long hours she spent at the bakery, the late nights filling orders, and the dedication she put into everything she did. Those moments shaped who I am today and instilled in me a work ethic that I’ll carry for life. I received the news of her passing while I was at my son’s wrestling tournament on Saturday. My brother called while I was walking outside between matches with my daughter, Kami. It hit me hard, but I had to collect myself and return to support my son. I haven’t had much time to process everything yet, but I know it will come. After spending my birthday celebrating a win for Legacy’s high school football team, Page, as they advanced in the playoffs, I was reminded of life’s fragility. We are all here for an uncertain amount of time, and when our time is up, it’s in God’s hands. My mom and I had a unique relationship, and there were challenges we had to overcome. Despite everything, she did something profoundly right. My brother and I have both lived fulfilling and successful lives, and that is a testament to her strength and determination. May she now find peace and freedom from pain in God’s presence, reunited with my father. Thank you all for your support and prayers during this time. God bless you.
