Jesus said to him, โ€œโ€˜You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.โ€™ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: โ€˜You shall love your neighbor as yourself.โ€™ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.โ€ Matthew 22:37-40

Writing the sermon for my sonโ€™s upcoming wedding has brought this to mind again: Men considering marriage should read: Masculine Christianity (Garris) Federal Husband (Wilson) And women: Praise Her in the Gates (Wilson) Once engaged, read together in the lead-up to the wedding: No Mere Mortals (Sumpter) Reforming Marriage (Wilson) Catching Foxes (Henderson) Good preparation is imperative!

โ€œthe Protestant Reformers, and those in their tradition, wrote confessions to keep the whole of the church from being held hostage by a part;โ€ Weak subscriptionalism once again exposes the church to this very danger, as has been demonstrated time and time again in the modern church.

Just finished my first book of the year. It consists of numerous excellent essays from men like L. Duncan, Dabney, and Morton Smith. However, Hallโ€™s essay โ€˜Re-Examining the Re-examiners of the Adopting Actโ€™ was the standout for me. This is a worthwhile read for all PCA ministers.

Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth. They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst of which they have fallen themselves. Selah. Psalm 57 : 5-6

The 2017 PCA Report on Women in Ministry adopts the novel complementarian view of 1 Corinthians 14:34-35. "the women should keep silent [ฯƒฮนฮณฮฌฯ‰] in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says" (1 Cor. 14:34, ESV). The PCA Report argued that Paul "means silent during the testing of prophecy (espoused by Carson, Grudem, and other more recent interpreters)" (p. 13). Thus, Paul only commanded women to be "silent" in the sense of "temporarily stop speaking" but only "while prophecy is tested" (p. 14). The reason this matters is that the Report concludes, "Outside the testing, women may pray, prophesy, sing, and provide a lesson" (p. 14). The Report's interpretation of 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 allows for women to lead public worship (with the exception of preaching per 1 Tim. 2:12). The Report even recommended "that sessions consider how to include non-ordained men and women in the worship of the church" because "within a complementarian framework, there is substantial, non-controversial opportunity for non-ordained men and women to participate in the leadership of a worship service" (p. 61). (How is this "non-controversial"?) This reflects the view of Kathy Keller (a voting member of the study committee), who elsewhere said that 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 is a "cloudy" passage, and that "Clearly, women are not prohibited in Scripture from most kinds of public speaking. Only one, the teaching mentioned in 1 Timothy 2:11โ€“12, is off-limits to women" (Jesus, Justice, and Gender Roles, pp. 14โ€“15, 18). However, the Report contradicts itself as to the meaning of the Greek verb sigao (ฯƒฮนฮณฮฌฯ‰) in 1 Corinthians 14:34. Regarding 1 Corinthians 14:34, the Report says, "Paul uses the word, sigao โ€“ ฯƒฮนฮณฮฌฯ‰, which rarely means total speechlessness. It can mean to keep something to oneself (Luke 9:36), to listen (Acts 15:12), or to be silent after speaking (Luke 20:26; Acts 15:13)" (p. 14). However, four pages later in a footnote on 1 Timothy 2:12, the Report says, "All the terms for silence and quietness overlap with each other somewhat, but the family of siopao, sige and sigao โ€“ ฯƒฮนฯ‰ฯ€ฮฌฯ‰, ฯƒฮนฮณฮฎ, ฯƒฮนฮณฮฌฯ‰ - is more likely to denote speechlessness, perhaps by choice (Luke 9:36, Acts 15:13)" (p. 18, fn. 26). So according to the 2017 PCA Report on Women in Ministry, the verb translated "silent" (ฯƒฮนฮณฮฌฯ‰) in 1 Corinthians 14:34 "rarely means total speechlessness" but is also "likely to denote speechlessness." Not exactly the best report we've seen. Paul's command really isn't that difficult. The word "silent" (ฯƒฮนฮณฮฌฯ‰) in 1 Corinthians 14:34 really does mean "say nothing" and "stop speaking" (BDAG โ€“ the standard Greek dictionary for the New Testament). But the silence isn't limited to testing prophecy (which isn't even in the text and assumes Grudem's view that NT prophecy is a less authoritative kind than OT prophecy). Rather, Paul makes it really clear in the next verse: "it is improper for a woman to speak in church" (1 Cor. 14:35). Not "it is improper for a woman to test prophesy in church." But rather, "it is improper for a woman to speak in church." Women should speak and sing along with the congregation corporately. But when it comes to getting up and speaking to the congregation or leading the congregation in prayer before Godโ€”"women are to keep silent." As B. B. Warfield said of 1 Corinthians 14:34-35โ€”"It would be impossible for the apostle to speak more directly or more emphatically than he has done here. He requires women to be silent at the church meetings."
