Prisons are under enormous pressure, but this is no excuse for inaction on fire safety. Overcrowding is a problem of politicians’ own making, and projections indicate that the prison population will continue to rise. How can ministers waste billions on building new jails when lives depend on them fixing the prisons we already have? theguardian.com/society/2026/m…

@JUSTICEhq @PeterStefanovi2 As an existing member please don't forget the proposed abolishion of the automatic right of appeal from the magistrates' court to the Crown Court. Equally important.

As Keir Monteith KC highlights, juries are a vital safeguard in our justice system, bringing diversity into decision-making that the judiciary does not reflect. Removing them risks inequality and undermines trust. Donate & support us in protecting them: bit.ly/4b7fEEK

This is the biggest reform to our Parliament in a generation. 🇬🇧 This morning, the 700-year-old system of hereditary membership in the House of Lords was abolished. Membership is now earned through public service and merit, not granted by an inheritance. ✅

Some papers reporting govt is considering a nationwide 50mph speed limit on cars to cut fuel use. Which is great news as I am limited to 20mph on almost all roads near me!

@HelenGrantMP @TheCriminalBar Don't forget the egregious proposal to abolish the automatic right of appeal from the magistrates' court to the Crown Court, the majority of which appeals are successful, demonstrating how important they are.

Depriving people of the right to trial by jury is an egregious assault on a pillar of our justice system. The opposition to these proposals is significant, be it the 3,200 lawyers, including senior barristers and retired judges, who wrote to the government last week about their opposition to the plans, or the 100 Labour MPs who refused to back the attempt by the government to curtail the right to trial by jury. The government must reverse its ill-judged decision. #JusticeNeedsJuries

"Some 3,000 of the Prime Minister’s fellow lawyers say that juries have not caused this crisis... Let us be clear: the Prime Minister’s backbenchers oppose it, his professional colleagues oppose it, and, in a previous life, he opposed it, so why is he forcing through a policy that is unjust in principle, unworkable in practice and opposed by everyone?" Thank you @DavidDavisMP for asking the Prime Minister to rethink plans to curtail jury trials. #JusticeNeedsJuries

@seatsixtyone Sorry to miss you. Chiltern Line I presume? One of the many unfortunate consequences of Birmingham's 1950s & 1960s builders & planners was the demolition of Snow Hill Station.

@HelenGrantMP @TheCriminalBar Under these proposals these defendants also would have no automatic right of appeal to the Crown Court, as they have at present.

Under the government's proposals, not one of the 900 wrongly convicted subpostmasters would have had a right to trial by jury. The Prime Minister himself concluded in a report that the scrapping of jury trials led to miscarriages of justice in Northern Ireland in the 1990s. The right to trial by jury must be protected. #JusticeNeedsJuries
