And splashdown! America is back in the business of sending astronauts to the Moon and bringing them home safely. Reid, Victor, Christina, and Jeremy did an outstanding job. These talented astronauts inspired the world and represented their space agencies and nations as humanity’s ambassadors to the stars. This was a test mission, the first crewed flight of SLS and Orion, pushing farther into the unforgiving environment of space than ever before, and it carried real risk. They accepted that risk for all we stood to learn and for the exciting missions that follow, as we return to the lunar surface, build a Moon base, and prepare for what comes next. And they were not alone. The entire NASA workforce, our commercial and international partners, and the hopes and dreams of people all over the world were with them. The astronauts know it, and you should too. This mission would not have been possible without you. Congratulations. Artemis II, mission accomplished.

Amaze, amaze, amaze! As we wrap up final testing and prep for shipment to @NASAKennedy, see how we got the hardware of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from testing to completion! While Roman's adventures at @NASAGoddard are coming to a close, this is just the beginning of its journey to study the cosmos! Make sure to follow to @NASARoman for updates.

As Congress returns to Washington this week, I’d like to thank my good friend Chairman @RepBrianBabin for his leadership on the @housescience Committee. Watching the historic launch from Kennedy Space Center alongside the Chairman is a memory I will never forget. Policy matters, and moments like Artemis II remind us why. The decisions we make in Washington directly shape what happens on the ground back home, from the engineers and technicians on Florida’s Space Coast to the next generation inspired to reach for the stars. America is leading in space again, and we’re just getting started!

With Artemis II complete, we’re preparing to roll Artemis III into the VAB. Artemis III will rendezvous with our partners in earth orbit as we continue building toward the @NASAMoonBase. Artemis missions will launch every year, with Artemis IV landing on the Moon in 2028.

Four outstanding humans, the Artemis II crew, inspired the world. The kids who watched them will continue to be inspired for years to come as we continue with Artemis III, IV, and beyond.

I am hesitant to get ahead of a proper data review, but I understand the space community’s curiosity, especially when imagery can give the impression of a problem. As you would expect, engineers were eager to inspect the heat shield, starting with diver imagery shortly after splashdown and continuing with the review aboard the ship. No unexpected conditions were observed. I suspect when the images are released, it will be pretty obvious the stark difference between Artemis I and Artemis II head shield performance. As to the question specifically, the discoloration was not liberated material. The white color observed corresponds to the compression pad area and is consistent with the local geometry, AVCOAT byproducts, and transitional heating environments. We observed this behavior in arc jet testing and expected it in this compression pad area. We will complete a full data review across all systems, including the thermal protection system, and make the results publicly available.

Congratulations to @NASA on Artemis II—making history and carrying exploration forward. A 695,081-mile journey—driven by the courage of our astronauts. Incredibly proud of the @USNavy team supporting the recovery mission and the USS John P. Murtha. We choose to go onward to the Moon—and beyond!

Let's run that back. One more time... Or two? Our crew is now safely back on Earth. Relive the historic mission, and keep an eye on our website as more images and videos keep rolling in. go.nasa.gov/3OhVQph

The astronauts. Their ride around the Moon. The Artemis II astronauts pose for a group photo after viewing their Orion spacecraft — which they named Integrity — in the well deck of USS John P. Murtha following their splashdown.
