On May 1, 1881, the infamous Johnny Ringo was passing time in a brothel in Austin's "Guy Town,' the notorious vice district that attracted gamblers, card sharps, various miscreants, drifting cowboys etc... Along about four o'clock, Johnny discovered that his wallet was missing. Stepping out in the hall, where some three or four of Austin's young men were milling about, Ringo came down upon them and ordered them to put their hands up, and searched them, looking for his wallet. He didn't find it and returned back to his room. The men slipped out, found Marshal Ben Thompson, and told him what had happened. Thompson went to the brothel, was refused admission, and kicked down the door. He found Ringo, who had quite a reputation as a gunslinger, disarmed him, marched Ringo to the police station, and fined him five dollars for disturbing the peace and another 25 dollars for carrying a pistol. Ringo paid his fine and, unwilling to challenge Ben Thompson's authority, slipped out of Austin. He subsequently turned up in Tombstone, Arizona, where he met up with "Curly Bill" Brocius, Doc Holliday, Morgan, Virgil and Wyatt Earp .... and infamy. @EllieGAnders I was in 5th grade when it happened. We all got to go home on the busses right after it happened. ALL the kids were happy on the bus that we were going home early. No one was traumatized. It was kinda sad but that's it.

Younger people won't understand how traumatizing the Challenger explosion was for us. They really hyped that a teacher was going to space. She was going to teach us lessons from space. They brought TVs into our classrooms to watch the launch. It was devestating.
