Allow us to be the bearers of very good news!✨ This week, on May 20th, 2026, The Kenyan High Court affirmed that transgender Kenyans are fully entitled to seek changes to gender and sex markers on official documents. But the win didn’t start there… #EqualityandJusticeforALL

Reshaping Narratives: Portrayal of LGBTIQ+ Kenyans in Democratic Processes The media says we need balance. But there is no 'other side' to our humanity. This episode on Queering The Ballot II podcast confronts an uncomfortable truth of queer voices being treated as optional,or worse, as problems requiring an 'opposing' viewpoint. Globally, 51 countries have documented politicians using homophobia and transphobia as electoral tools, according to a recent research by Outright International. In Kenya, we have watched candidates focus on who we love instead of the cost of living and on our existence instead of corruption and other social issues that the country is grappling with. Social media and independent platforms are giving us space to own our stories. The media "balances" our humanity with hate, and we must build alternatives. Our vote. Our future. Our narrative. Victory at last. The first person charged with the death penalty under Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, arrested in Aug 2023 for “aggravated homosexuality” and later downgraded to “unnatural offenses,” has had the case dismissed by a Ugandan court after 2+ years. Thank you to all our partners, the legal team & friends. 🏳️‍🌈🇺🇬

Even in the most homophobic countries, queer people still organize, find joy, and thrive often underground. Those communities don’t fall into your lap. Beyond hookup culture, real friendship and camaraderie exist. If you’re not finding them, you’re not looking hard enough.

Kenya’s democracy has never been complete without LBGTIQ+ voices. For years, our human rights were dismissed as “non-issues.” Our Vote, Our Future: LGBTIQ+ Inclusion in Democratic and Governance Processes in Kenya report proves otherwise, documenting queer lived realities in 14 counties, from Busia to Mombasa, from fear to fierce organizing. “All Kenyans have the right to participate in democracy, it’s a human right.” – Supreme Court of Kenya (2023) We have always been political. The numbers don’t lie. This report uncovers how queer Kenyans have always shaped civic engagement; – 73.5% of queer Kenyans fear violence during elections. – 83% say their voices aren’t represented in politics. – 47% say public attitudes have grown more hostile. Still, 82% showed up to vote because hope is resistance. “Following the 2023 anti-LGBTQ protests, some of us had to relocate for safety.” – Kwale FGD respondent From safe houses to digital defense, queer Kenyans continue to protect each other when systems fail. This is resilience. This is resistance. This is Our Vote. This is Our Future! #QueeringTheBallot #OurVoteOurFuture

On November 21st 2025, we launched Queering The Ballot II Campaign and shared findings from Our Vote, Our Future: LGBTIQ+ Inclusion in Democratic and Governance Processes in Kenya, a 2024 Situation Report on queer participation in Kenya’s democracy. From 14 counties, 189 survey responses, and 12 key informant interviews come one truth: Queer Kenyans are not outsiders to democracy; we are its heartbeat. This report calls on Parliament, IEBC, County Assemblies, and every citizen to make inclusion not symbolic but systemic. "The title Our Vote our Future: LGBTIQ+ Inclusion in Democratic and Governance Processes in Kenya is an ode to the spirit of the Queer movement in Kenya: Unshaken in the face of adversity, determined in its pursuit of justice, and unrelenting in demand to be seen, heard, and counted in democratic and political processes. As you read this report, we urge you not only to witness the pain and courage within, but to act through policy, funding, allyship, and public discourse to ensure that Kenya’s democracy is one where every person can live and lead with pride, safety, and purpose. Let this be more than a document. Let it be a continuous and consistent turning point and let it remind us: No one is free until we are all free! No one is safe until we are all safe!" -Dr. Willy Mutunga, Chief Justice & President of the Supreme Court, Kenya, 2011-2016 Read it, Share it, Act on It! tr.ee/qRYkQt66VF @IEBCKenya @IEBC_WCC @IEBC_DICC @CMDKenya @ELGIA_Africa @SemaUkweliKenya #QueeringTheBallot #OurVoteOurFuture

In 2020 during lockdown, I visited my father’s family and came out to them. My grandpa said “oh we have a lot of people like you in Benin 🇧🇯” proceeded to mention some names. And when I was leaving, they all contributed money and gave it to me. They must have known homosexuality is expensive. And my aunt who has since been trying to matchmake me with all the wrong people.
