@NI_LGA all councils virtually AGM taking place this morning, new @NI_LGA President will be elected and members will get an update from @CommunitiesNI on the partnership role of local government in a post Covid-19 society.

Cllr Matt Garrett @belfastcc elected @NI_LGA President for the 2020/21 term. In his address, Cllr Garrett acknowledged that it was an exceptionally challenging time for our sector. During his term he hopes to bring about a reformed, revitalised, and resurgent local government

Finance Minister @conormurphysf met with the Construction Industry Forum this morning. He outlined the importance of the sector to economic recovery & his commitment to continuing to assist the industry as it emerges from lock down.

The all Council @NI_LGA Executive meeting today had a clear focus on safe community, economic and financial recovery. @MichaelAodhan provided an update on the retail sector with Members developing policies and outcomes on council finances, childcare provision and future planning.

Members of our online #tourism and #hospitality business forum developed to support sector, joined by @NITouristBoard CEO @johnmcgrillen1 this AM as he outlined industry responses to current crisis: much appreciated by #MidUlster businesses keenly working on reopening the sector!

Thanks to funding from @daera_ni, improvement works to Cairn Wood will begin shortly. Initial construction of a WC facility and extension to the car park will take place between June to October 2020. 🚫There will be NO PUBLIC ACCESS TO CAIRN WOOD for duration of these works 🚫

Derek McCallan CEO @NI_LGA tells @BBCRadioFoyle this am that “councils need resources for frontline services from HMT through Stormont to make sure they are protected..every step is being taken but intervention is required..”

Investing in our councils and backing them properly will yield much greater results for our local economies, societies and democracies says Derek.

Derek says all councils are looking at every penny they spend but says direct intervention needs to come from central government. He says councils are a small part of the public purse but a hugely significant part.
