One of the greatest and oldest special effects in history can be witnessed in Rome today And it has been playing out, on cue, for nearly 2000 years... Each year on April 21, the traditional birthday of Rome — the legendary date Romulus founded the city in 753 BC — the midday sun pierces the oculus at the crown of the Pantheon's dome and casts a perfect disk of light that settles squarely on the temple's entrance. For roughly two minutes and fifty seconds, the bronze doors blaze gold... At that exact moment, the Emperor would step across the threshold, his body swallowed in sunlight, as though the heavens themselves were handing him the city. Hadrian's engineers designed the entire building as a cosmos in miniature: the interior is exactly 43.3 metres wide and 43.3 metres tall, meaning a perfect sphere fits inside it. The Roman senator Cassius Dio wrote that the vaulted roof was meant to resemble the heavens themselves...

On this night 251 years ago, two men climbed Old North Church's steeple. They held high two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British were heading to Concord via the Charles River. Their famous “one if by land, two if by sea” warning ignited the American Revolution.

THIS MAKES NO SENSE: @ArlingtonVA spent tons of money to make Army Navy Drive safer. Particularly near S. Hayes St. Yet, multiple times daily, vehicle carriers are allowed to block the bus lane for a half-hour or more at a time. They then drive cars the wrong way on this major roadway. As my previous post showed (below ⏬⏬), there is room on the Fashion Centre property to handle this without putting the people walking and driving nearby in jeopardy. This has gone on for years. I hope someone in charge will finally make the rental car companies and the mall do their business on their own property and not in the middle of a busy public road. @ARLnowDOTcom @matthewyoung31 @NFTC_News @charlienbc @AdamTuss @HCBright10 @ArlingtonVaPD @ArlingtonDES @Susan4Arlington @maureencoffeyva @Matt4Arlington @TakisKarantonis @JDSpainSr @Budget @Avis #safety #traffic #arlington

Watch: Isn’t this a bit crazy? Wrong-way driving. Backing up a half block in traffic. Blocking a bus lane for more than an hour. For years, car carriers have parked on Army Navy Drive to drop off and pick up cars in Pentagon City. I gather this is for the car rental companies in the Fashion Centre. Today, at least four of the trucks pulled up within a little more than an hour. The third truck, a double-sized, articulating rig, parked in the driveway in front of Macy’s and unloaded there (see image below 🔽🔽). The question is, why don’t all of them do the loading and unloading on the mall’s property? There’s room on both the Army Navy side and the 15th and Joyce end (two images below 🔽🔽). I really sympathize with drivers trying to find a place to park their big trucks. It’s not easy. But there is probably a better way to do this. Don’t wait until someone gets hurt. @ARLnowDOTcom @matthewyoung31 @NFTC_News @charlienbc @AdamTuss @HCBright10 @ArlingtonVaPD @ArlingtonDES @Susan4Arlington @maureencoffeyva @Matt4Arlington @TakisKarantonis @JDSpainSr @Budget @Avis #safety #traffic #arlington #PentagonCity

A few months before he passed away in 2003, a 74 year old children’s television host sat down in the same studio where he had filmed 895 episodes over 33 years and recorded one last message. It wasn’t for children. It was for the adults who had grown up watching him. Fred Rogers hosted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on American public television from 1968 to 2001. For over three decades he walked into the same set, changed into a cardigan and sneakers, looked directly into the camera, and spoke to children as if each one of them was the only person in the room. He never raised his voice, never talked down to his audience, and never rushed a single moment. In that final recording, he looked into the camera one last time and said “I’m just so proud of all of you who have grown up with us. And I know how tough it is some days to look with hope and confidence on the months and years ahead. But I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger. I like you just the way you are.” He passed away from stomach cancer on February 27, 2003. He was 74.

Kosovo’s political landscape may have shifted on March 6th. The Assembly’s failure to elect a president and the dissolution of parliament have triggered a constitutional and political crisis that could reshape the next electoral cycles. My latest analysis for @BalkanInsight ⬇️
