You know, how can it be cheaper than the Valve Index on launch, especially with prices of memory and compute being so expensive.
Furthermore, Valve took the extremely strange decision to assemble it in Thailand (where it is faraway from the supply chain) and that is added costs + overheads.
Lastly, whether it is Thailand or China or Korea or Cambodia, they all face the same amount of import taxes into USA.....
So, all in all, I really really expect the unit to be around $1499 if not more. Maybe the really basic and stripped down version is $1299 or $1399 but, if it is the stripped down verison, why get that instead of a Quest 3?

Lowkey I can make an argument for the Frame at near 1K FOR PCVR. If you're pure standalone gaming... nah but PCVR? I can do that.

I can say that's it's overpriced like other sff but also it have features like CEC. The other question is "is it worth it?" For someone yea, for me no.

A Valve employee says buying RAM has become much harder due to the ongoing memory shortage and rising demand from AI companies.
According to the employee, memory suppliers come to Valve once a month with a price and a set amount of RAM they can buy.
Valve either accepts the deal or passes on it. If the company says no, the suppliers usually don’t come back with another offer.
“Look, there’s no contracts. There’s nothing. Those guys… they give us a price every month or something and they say, ‘you can buy that many,’ and it’s yes or no. And if we say no, then they never talk to us again.”
The company says the current market has made hardware components much more expensive than usual.

I played Star Wars: Galactic Racer and was really really impressed.
-The DNA of the devs past experience (Burnout, Need for Speed) is all over this game.
-Visuals and audio are top tier and feel very true to Star Wars.
-The 3rd person hub areas are really cool and a surprising feature.
-Sense of speed is insane.
-Takedowns are epic and feel right out of Burnout Takedown
-Tons of customization
-Podracing feels PERFECT
Cannot wait for this one man

Part of the console market is that the console itself is underpriced because sales they will make on games and digital purchases will recoup the loss

I feel bad for Valve here tbh. Everyone attacking them over the price when it's largely out of their control and due to the insane prices on memory currently
Obviously you can build a better PC yourself cheaper but I view this more as a "PC console" rather than a typical PC

Okay I get that Valve. Just one thing, why are you charging publishers 30 percent on Steam for selling games, and making cash on loot boxes etc
You can't even say Sony are selling peripherals as an extra, because Valve are selling controllers separately too

Why do people think Valve should subsidize a PC where you can just install any Linux distro or Windows on it and never use it for Steam. Hell, you can use default SteamOS and still just pirate or emulate games on it
It's console-like. not a console where you can only use it to play their games. There is no guarantee that a user will ever buy Steam games cause it isn't locked to Steam

Kinda weird being a SFF (small form factor) PC enthusiast and seeing the comparisons of pricing between the largest Walmart ATX prebuilt against the Steam Machine
Is Steam Machine a good value? Nope! But SFF historically has a much higher price/perf cost compared to standard..
