Despite the actual meaning of the word, the usage of the particular word like this in casual speaking would be distinctly towards a male subject. Beautiful boy represents the spirit of what was said best

My favorite anecdote along these lines is about Samuel Howe, who volunteered as a medic in the Greek War while only knowing Ancient Greek and who claimed that the first words in modern Greek he learned were "What a beautiful boy!" because he heard it from the men constantly.
