Anyway, back to ZoLa. Enter an address in the search bar. It can no longer look up addresses. A core function – gone! It had been deteriorating for a while, but I'm told that the last people who built it just left, so now I guess there's nobody left to fix it

NYC used to have a bad but usable map applet for zoning and property information, called ZoLa. A few years ago they hired a team to redo it, and really improved it. It's this: zola.planning.nyc.gov ...then they lost all of the people who built it, and now it doesn't work.

@MattH There's also a nerdy metaphor we love: "Data ages like wine, code ages like fish."

@NYCPlanningLabs There is that well-known labs-adjacent tweet about the timeline of rewrites! But seriously I also love app clones with small changes.

Hot take: Embrace the rewrite! Apps that are small enough to be rebuilt give newer developers a valuable "greenfield" opportunity while giving space to implement lessons learned & fresh approaches. Thoughts?

Curious: what do you miss most about the #civictech world, pre-COVID? Being virtual means we've been a bit fatigued by the "tech" side of that coin and can't wait for more in-person Labby Hours. Someday soon!

@NYCPlanningLabs Yes, thanks. Should we use that going forward? Or do you think the main geosearch URL will be fixed soon?

GeoSearch production is now back up! We apologize for the inconvenience. A postmortem to follow soon, but in short: we were upgrading our infrastructure to accommodate more regular address updates (via PAD) and a stale SSL certificate blocked incoming requests.

Experiencing a few issues with GeoSearch's DNS. In the meantime, you can use staging.geosearch.planninglabs.nyc as an API endpoint for querying. Note that the documentation site is also not able to query correctly. Updates to follow.
