Alhamdulillah, all praises belong to Allah. We thank Allah, the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful, for His countless blessings and for giving us the opportunity to observe the holy month of Ramadan. We had an amazing Members Appreciation and Interfaith Iftar Dinner at our NYPD PoliceHeadquarters. We are deeply grateful to our Police Commissioner, Jessica Tisch, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, our families, the Muslim community, and our interfaith partners for their presence and support. It was truly heartwarming to see everyone come together to break fast in harmony and peace. This auspicious gathering is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of Muslim officers who continue to strengthen relationships and bridge the gap between the police department and the communities we proudly serve. May this blessed month of Ramadan continue to bring peace, unity, and blessings to all. @nypdpc @NYPDnews @NYCMayor

This is the second year that we have had the honor of lighting the Crescent to welcome the holy month of Ramadan. Honorable Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch illuminated the Crescent as the blessed month began, symbolizing unity, inclusion, and respect for faith within our great Department. It was a true moment of pride for Muslim officers, a powerful reflection of our commitment to service, our dedication to this city, and our ability to honor both our faith and our duty to the people of New York.

Ramadan is a time of peace, reflection, and renewal for Muslim New Yorkers across the city, including more than 3,500 Muslim members of the NYPD. As we approach the beginning of this holy month, we are committed to ensuring that everyone observing Ramadan can do so safely and with peace of mind. The NYPD is increasing our presence outside of mosques and other sensitive locations, and we will continue to work with community leaders to provide support where it is needed. At this time, there are no known specific or credible threats related to Ramadan observances here in NYC. But recently there have been several disgusting attacks targeting the Muslim community, which will never be tolerated. On January 30th, three New Yorkers wearing hijabs were attacked and told to "go back to your country." This kind of hatred has no place in New York City, and our Hate Crimes Task Force quickly made an arrest. That speed matters. When hate shows itself in our city, the NYPD acts — quickly and decisively. As we move into Ramadan, presence and partnership remain critical, not just up until Eid, but throughout the year. As always, if you see something, say something.

We sincerely thank all our members for their continued support, commitment, and active participation. We also extend our deep appreciation to our community leaders and interfaith partners for their unwavering support and solidarity. As an organization, we remain steadfast in advocating for our members and in countering all forms of misinformation directed at our faith. Greetings, I am writing in my capacity as President of the NYPD Muslim Officers Society to formally address and correct misinformation published on social media platforms regarding an alleged request by Muslim police officers for exemption from saluting the flag of the United States of America. To be absolutely clear, no Muslim officer of the New York City Police Department has ever requested an exemption from saluting the American flag. This claim is entirely false, misleading, and without any factual basis. Furthermore, the First Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to freely practice their religion. In accordance with these constitutional protections, female police officers of the Islamic faith are permitted to observe their religious practices while fully upholding their sworn oath to protect and serve all communities within New York City and throughout our nation. The wearing of the hijab is a religious choice made by Muslim female officers in full compliance with both the United States Constitution and New York City Police Department policies. Bigotry and ignorance have no place in our society; especially when directed at those who serve honorably in uniform. The dissemination of inaccurate and inflammatory information undermines the integrity, professionalism, and service of our members, while also fueling misunderstanding and hostility toward Muslims who proudly serve this country. I respectfully urge you to exercise accuracy, responsibility, and due diligence in your reporting, and to refrain from promoting false narratives that foster division or hatred. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Waheed Akhter President NYPD Muslim Officers Society @NYPDPC @NYCMayor @POTUS @GovKathyHochul
