I’ve heard some chatter about spending less time on passports and more time on fixing the economy. I’m responsible for both, so I thought I'd explain my work on both. Earlier this year, the Department of Internal Affairs approached me to give an update on a scheduled security upgrade for our passport, which includes new passport booklets. I told the Department as part of this that we should deliver an English-first approach, consistent with this Government’s commitment, with no additional time or cost. The new passport with the new cover will only be issued once existing booklets have been used up, out of respect for Kiwis paying for passports and in line with the security update. We are delivering what we said we would. My focus as Minister is on finding efficiencies and building business confidence. Outside of this quick decision, I have been focusing on ensuring we have flexible labour markets, reforming our health and safety system, and fixing the Holidays Act. What the media won’t tell you is we can and will deliver a better economy and efficiencies across Government that Kiwis deserve, and honour our commitments at the same time.
