Professor Refaat Alareer was killed by Israeli forces, his friend announced on Thursday. Alareer was a co-founder of the ‘We Are Not Numbers’ project, a professor at the Islamic University of Gaza, and one of Gaza's most prominent writers, poets & activists

Refaat loved life and loved Chicago deep dish pizza. He called Chicago the "Shujaiya of America." That made us proud. Weeks ago I told him that when this was all over we'd share pizza again. A tiny one of the millions of dreams destroyed by his barbaric and merciless murderers.

I've known Refaat Alareer (@itranslate123) since I was 17. He taught me my first English writing course. More than a teacher, he was a mentor, a friend, and he truly cared about his students beyond the classroom. His passion was the English language, but he didn't teach it as a means of disassociating from society, as is common among many English-speaking upper and middle classes in the third world. For Refaat, English was a tool of liberation, a way to break free from Gaza's prolonged siege, a teleportation device that defied Israel's fences and the intellectual, academic, and cultural blockade of Gaza. When Refaat taught English to me and my friends, he ensured we read Malcolm X, or el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, as he often reminded us to call him. He emphasized that learning a language requires understanding its culture and being critical and mindful that language is not free from questions of power and representation. Refaat's journey in learning and teaching was filled with struggles. His life was challenging, marked by significant family losses. Yet, he persevered, fought back, and wrote back. One day, many of us, as Refaat's students, will share parts of his story. However, today, let's remember that Refaat has a family in Gaza mourning a loving father and husband. If we owe Refaat anything, it is to continue our fight until a ceasefire is achieved, until the destruction in Gaza ceases. So, #CeasefireNOW! The Martyr Muntaser Al-Sawaf 33 years old He worked as a journalist and photographer for Anadolu Agency in the city of Gaza. He was injured in an Israeli airstrike on his home, which claimed the lives of all his family members. He remained alive with his brother Marwan. Despite his injuries, he continued to cover events and expose Israeli crimes in Gaza. Muntasir bled for half an hour without the ambulances being able to reach him. He was martyred along with his brother Marwan in an Israeli airstrike near their home on December 1, 2023.

The footage of Israeli soldiers torturing and humiliating detained Palestinian men in Gaza is horrific. We’ve seen terrible images like this from genocides throughout history. We know what this leads to. Never again means never again for anyone.

My heart sank at these pictures. Israel’s Forces stripped Palestinian men, tortured them and claims are being made these men were all executed. A systematic execution of Palestinian men. This is the very same act of genocide that occurred in Srebrenica & throughout Bosnia.

“We did what we could. Remember us.”  These are words MSF Dr Mahmoud Abu Nujaila, who was killed in a hospital strike, wrote on a Gaza hospital whiteboard. Four of our colleagues have been killed. Many more have lost family members. It #MustStopNow.
