Grateful that Newport is working with @SaveTheBayRI to deploy oil absorbent socks w/sandbags and/or hay bales to try and prevent meltwater from the snow pile at Easton's from carrying litter and petrochemicals onto the beach and into the water.

Premiering on Fri @ 8pm is Episode One: Secrets of the Seagrass, the first part in a series highlighting Rhode Island coastal ecosystems & the vital role they play in our lives. @SaveTheBayRI is proud to be a conservation partner in this series and looks forward to watching
Save The Bay@SaveTheBayRI

Check out the premiere of the new documentary series, Ocean State: Rhode Island’s Wild Coast! 🎥 Save The Bay is proud to be a conservation partner on this project, and our very own Aquarium Curator, Adam Kovarsky, and Baykeeper Captain Chris Dodge are featured in Episode One: Secrets of the Seagrass. Watch the premiere airing on January 9 at 8 pm on Ocean State Media WSBE and streaming on PBS! Secrets of the Seagrass explores the hidden world of eelgrass meadows—one of the region’s most important yet least understood marine habitats. Often called the “nurseries of the sea,” eelgrass beds support a remarkable diversity of life while playing a critical role in coastal resilience, water quality, and climate mitigation. Filmed across Rhode Island and greater New England, the episode showcases iconic and ecologically important species, including the American lobster, American eel, bay scallops, and numerous other fish and invertebrates that depend on healthy eelgrass ecosystems for survival. The episode also features leading scientists, conservationists, and marine experts working on the front lines of coastal research and habitat restoration. Organizations highlighted include Save the Bay and The Nature Conservancy, along with regional institutions and leaders in science and conservation advancing efforts to protect and restore eelgrass throughout the Northeast. Waterkeepers supporting Waterkeepers! This week, Save The Bay's Narragansett Baykeeper and Riverkeeper teamed up for a watershed project! "I had a beautiful afternoon with volunteers supporting @nbriverkeeper SRPEDD and the town of Middleborough MA during a planting day at Oliver Mill Park along the Nemasket River in Middleborough, MA. Invasives were cleared back in June in preparation for planting, and today native plants were placed to help with erosion control and act as a small buffer in this popular park along a gorgeous stretch of river. The water flowing down the Nemasket will make its way into the Taunton River, Mt. Hope Bay, and eventually Narragansett Bay. While this site may be far away geographically, it's all connected by water." - Chris Dodge, Narragansett Baykeeper @Narrabaykeeper

Use discretion & check available resources when engaging in aquatic activities after rain events. Please keep in mind, these results are days old, & don't represent current conditions. Lots of things can quickly change bacterial concentrations in water, particularly heavy rain

Catch up posting bacterial data for SW Aquidneck Island & PVD River & Upper Bay. Sorry for the delay. W/rain Tues night, elevated results Wed morning on AI aren't surprising. Also, and surprisingly, Rocky Pt. continues to be high. Maybe something for us to look into deeper.

Remember, these results are now 2 & 3 days old at the time of posting, and do not represent current conditions at each location. Many things can quickly change the bacterial concentration in the water, especially large rains, like the rain on this past Sat and Mon before testing.

Another week of bacterial monitoring. This week was both our weekly Urban Beach monitoring in the Providence River and upper Bay on June 10, in addition to our biweekly Aquidneck Island Monitoring on June 11.

We'll be sampling upper Bay sites every week and Aquidneck Island sites every other. Remember, results are two days old and don't represent current conditions. Lots can change the bacterial concentration, particularly rain events which we experienced between sampling and posting

Our summer '25 bacterial monitoring season is off! We're sampling 6 sites on Aquidneck Island and 5 sites in the Providence River and upper Bay, all are non-licensed swimming locations that are not required to be tested by RIDOH. But we want to provide users with relevant data.

Photo and some quotes by yours truly. Please remember that even dead whales are still protected by the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act, and while observing the animal is ok, any other interactions are illegal
Boston Globe Rhode Island@Globe_RI

The cause of death for a minke whale that recently washed up on shore in East Providence, R.I., will remain unknown, as its carcass has decomposed too much to study, experts said Monday. trib.al/ekkzcsc

With the Baykeeper boat back in the water, @SaveTheBayRI is able to be more responsive to on-the-water concerns as they arise. These days, that work involves keeping an eye on the Washington Bridge demolition project as it moves forward.

Super excited to have the Narragansett Baykeeper vessel "Seaverge" back in the water and home at the @SaveTheBayRI Bay Center in PVD. Ready for the 2025 season patrolling, water quality monitoring, meeting users, and maintaining a presence as the eyes and ears of Narragansett Bay
