The Government of Ecuador has proposed listing the Scalloped hammerhead shark (𝘚𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘳𝘯𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘪) under CMS Appendix I. 🦈
Scalloped hammerhead sharks are true ocean migrants. Born in coastal nursery areas, they later move into the open ocean, while adult females return on seasonal birthing migrations.
They can travel thousands of kilometres in short time frames, and they are the only large hammerhead species known to school, a behaviour that also makes them more vulnerable to targeted fishing. 🎣
With declines of more than 80% over the past three generations, this Critically Endangered migratory species will be considered for stronger international conservation action at #CMSCOP15.
