Recently, I’ve seen a ton of people trying to change the meaning of the word Goy. What is Goy? In the Bible Goy just means Nation/People, which includes Israel (“גּוֹי קָדוֹשׁ” / “a holy nation” in Exodus 19:6) and Abraham (“וְאֶעֶשְׂךָ לְגוֹי גָּדוֹל” / “I will make you into a great nation” in Genesis 12:2). In modern Hebrew, in addition to the meaning Nation, Goy also just means Gentile (not Jewish). Goy (גוי) is just how the word Gentile sounds in Hebrew. A good example for this is the word Anime. Anime (アニメ) is just how the word cartoon/animation/film sounds in Japanese. English has Gentile, Hebrew has Goy. Who is trying to change the meaning of the word, and to what, and why? People who want to make everyone hate Jews are trying to change the meaning of the word Goy into a slur because people don’t really understand Hebrew and don’t know the word already exists in English (Gentile) and can also, in a Biblical context, mean Nation. I also heard people say that the actual translation of the word Goy doesn’t matter if people use the word with the intention of it being an insult. They give me examples like the word Monkey to compare it to Goy, that monkey just means an animal and is not a slur, but people use it as a slur. The difference is that calling a person money implies they are an animal, which directly calls them primitive or something less than a person. While the word Goy has no such implication, it just means Nation/People in the biblical context and Gentile in the modern context. Saying a person is ‘not Jewish’ is not an insult. It’s like calling a Bird not a Car. The word functions to diffrentiate in legal religious terms who is obligated to follow which commandments according to God. Gentiles have the Noahide laws to follow. And Jews have additional laws according to Judaism.
