Robert Mueller was among our most distinguished public servants. This is a man who asked to be returned to his job as an unglamorous line prosecutor, after having been promoted to higher levels, because he missed the day-to-day task of keeping the streets safe from crime and trying cases. He arrived at FBI as Director days before 9/11 and did not miss a beat, refocusing the FBI on counterterrorism and keeping the country safe from terror 24/7 for years, no doubt at great personal cost. The job of FBI Director in wartime, when performed ably, is deadly serious and exhausting. I disagreed with his decision to move from the firm that was defending Paul Manafort to be Manafort’s prosecutor, though he was technically permitted to do so. And I disagreed strongly with some decisions he made as Special Counsel. But I never doubted his patriotism, his devotion to the rule of law and public service, and his personal character and valor. Semper Fi.
