@B4Btv @shatrunjay1412 There is a lot of research to be done on Jpn counselors and advisors in reorganized China. Yet the choice to establish a monarchical state - a putative empire - is significant because it speaks to wider issues of sovereignty, Manchu nationalism, royalty and int. order after WW1.

I come to utterly dislike the term "puppet state." It strips away all nuances and contradictions of collaboration, and tells us even less about how collaborationist regimes changed over time. For myself the term has become an evasion of harder and messier historical questions.

The Propaganda poster of Manchukuo, 1932-33. Manchukuo was a puppet state of the Empire of Japan in China from 1932 until 1945.

Exploring post-war Tokyo and representations of the city through printed materials, Tokyo Ephemera at @IMT_Tokyo is a superbly laid out and conceptually rich exhibition. Packs a lot into a small space. Well worth visiting before it finishes on September 3. intermediatheque.jp/en/schedule/vi…

Took over six months to finish all 956 pages of this "labyrinthine" book where the "main character" isn't referred to by his name for most of it or really even shows up that often

@PhillipLipscy I’m not sure it would be too big an impact. About 30k marriages are to foreigners, and the majority is Japanese woman to a non-Japanese man. And then we have to assume that couple has kids. It can’t be that huge, right?

Japan’s low fertility rate is even worse than it seems: when a Japanese child is born to a foreign mother, the government omits the mother from the data, inflating the rate. Officials are reluctant to alter the Meiji-era method for consistency reasons tokyo-np.co.jp/article/260366…

@Mulboyne I stayed there for a spell twice during the pandemic. The family who runs it is lovely and they were quite willing and able to accommodate a fulsome vegan menu.

In 2011, Kinosaki Onsen had 1,118 foreign vistors. Eight years later, there were over 50,000. 90% of guests at Morizuya Ryokan are from overseas, and sometimes over two thirds are repeat customers. TV Asahi had this report: youtube.com/watch?v=rpoPn1…

Um, hey @britishmuseum, it's come to my attention that your exhibit "China's hidden century" uses my translations of Qiu Jin's poetry, but you never contacted me for permission. Please note this is a copyright infringement! How are you going to fix this?? #NameTheTranslator

Though I admit I wouldn't lambast the 2010s Dr. Martens mass market revival, as I'm painfully aware I was very far from "being authentic" when I wore three-eyelet oxbloods with chino shorts and white socks in high school...
