@Popher On the same scale-ish, cat whiskers are used for handling crystals in x-ray diffraction. (No cats are harmed, they fall naturally.)

Many of the patterns and colours we see on spiders are crystals of retained uric acid (one type of metabolic waste). Depending on the overlaying material you can get a whole range of colours.
