@noellenoyuki No you said I was fighting tooth and nail while I was also having a discussion. Can't talk to someone who can't have a rational discussion without their personal feelings. That's my last reply. Goodbye

@Nawtypikachu I'm simply having a discussion, because I like talking about this stuff. You are the only one hellbent on turning it into an argument. If you consider a tweet "4 paragraphs" though, I think that tells me all I need to know about you. Have a good day.

Since Harry Potter is in the news, this is a good excuse to repost one of my favorite Mark McGurl essays. Hogwarts is a technical school. No pondering the meaning of life here!

@noellenoyuki That's my point. you don't like her public persona and are trying to discredit her writing as a whole bcuz u don't like her as a person. Caricature is different from racism

@Nawtypikachu all of those authors are also criticized for their racism and antisemitism, Rowling just gets it amplified because she is publicly morally reprehensible and a petty person on top of it. But she has been criticized from the beginning in that regard just as much as, say, Disney.

@noellenoyuki How is debating on Twitter fighting tooth and nail? Goes to show how your assessment of people and situations is based on your personal feelings and not objective reality 😂

@Nawtypikachu Not understanding how our criticisms are widely agreed upon assessments of her writings aside, what is it that you get out of being on day 2 of fighting tooth and nail for someone like Rowling? I'm curious.

A lot of Harry Potter inconsistencies can be put down to “they are books for children”. They weren’t supposed to make sense. Unfortunately children who read books 1-3 were adults when 6-7 came out. Many of those adults have since mythologised hogwarts as part of their childhood.
Gay Interrupted@TwinkTheory

How did Harry potters parents have all that cash for his trust fund? They died at 21 and the only jobs in the wizarding world are civil servant, barmaid, teacher or shop owner. Or is it just like magic? And if so how are the Weasleys poor like how far does magic go? Are they just bad at magic?

@noellenoyuki Your feelings can change but that doesn't mean her writing sucks. It's not an objective assessment of her writing but your subjective feelings

@Nawtypikachu it's not contradictory to feel differently about something at 29 years old than you did at 14 lol. there are several things we consumed as kids (and as adults) that were satisfactory enough at the time but are, on a professional and critical level, lacking at best.

@noellenoyuki great writers and cartoonists like roald dahl with oompa loompas, Tolkein with orcs, Disney were explicitly racist. Jkr seems aware enough to make attempts, albeit poorly executed, at commenting on slavery and activism but isn't outright racist. Her characters are caricatures

@Nawtypikachu The naming conventions (Shacklebolt, Cho Chang), stereotypes (the Irish character always blowing up and being drawn to pyrotechnics, the goblins), the way she describes the other magical schools and how much "care" (stereotypes) she puts into them.

@noellenoyuki Going from reading 7 long books to now saying the writing sucks is contradictory. You could say you see the flaws more clearly now but you would have never finished the books if the writing "sucked"

@Nawtypikachu I do think it sucks. I'm not contradicting myself, I think the amount of flaws she has makes the writing suck in my opinion. The same way I think the writing in Naruto and Hetalia sucks, yet those are very important shows/manga for me. It's okay to like things that suck.

@noellenoyuki She did not do justice to the pure bloods vs muggles and activism against slavery sub plots but how was she racist in the books? Bcuz of cho chang? Whites also had pansy parkinson type stereotypical names

@Nawtypikachu I think some people performatively downplay how much impact she had on their ichildhoods, and I think it solves nothing for some to act like they were never fans, but the critisms of her writing abilities especially re: the racism in the books is 100% warranted.

I never thought there would be a more obnoxious crowd than “the book was better” Harry Potter fans. But here we are. 25 years later. The “the movies were better” Harry Potter crowd is gearing up for a generational run for people you don’t want to hang out with. Y’all boring.

@Nawtypikachu growth is being able to look back on things you liked and look at it through experienced eyes that can now point out the flaws (and strengths) you didn't notice before. Why would I hesitate to do so just because I loved it when I was 14? I critiqued it even then.

@noellenoyuki @CraigGaIIagher It's not the constructive criticism of the books but the recent hatred for her as a person which has made a lot of people make absolutely unwarranted and biased attacks on her as a writer

Eye-watering numbers. Warner Bros. & HBO are patting themselves on the back already. Old fans will be watching. New fans will be watching. Haters will be watching. Liars who swear they won't be watching will for sure be watching.

“It’s going to be book accurate!” They say as they cast a black Snape and add their own scenes that were never written in the books. I’m telling you, this is not being made for the book lovers, it’s being made as a money grab and to replace the original cast because half of them don’t talk to J.K. anymore.
Wizarding World Direct@WW_Direct

Casey Bloys confirms that the HARRY POTTER TV series will feature scenes that appear neither in the films nor in the books "There will be things in the show that were not in the movies, but also were not necessarily in the books, but are not off-canon, you just didn't necessarily see them"
