Today is International Human Rights Day. Yesterday, I had the special honour of arguing before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on behalf of Namibia in the climate change obligations of states advisory opinion proceedings in The Hague.
Namibia’s oral submissions focused on the adverse consequences of greenhouse gas emissions particularly on the hydrosphere and the right to water as a global concern. In this clip, two points are made on extraterritorial application of rights and the obligations owed to future, unborn generations. It’s stunning that this still remains a point to rebut from a minority of state participants.
I owe this opportunity, my first ever appearance in any court, to the trust of the Ministry of Justice Namibia and @ydausab who agreed to the proposal to submit to the ICJ with a water focus many months ago.
This is a short clip and our full submissions with Ambassador Dr Mekondjo Kaapanda-Girnus and led by @Phoebe_Okowa can be viewed on the ICJ website in the first comment.
A thank you post to the many involved for Team Namibia to follow.
