@HDRgameAnalysis There is no monitor or oled TV capable of 2000 nits. It usually achieves that in a less than 10% of the panel, the rest is between 100-400 nits.

I have received many questions about how to setup HDR on a gaming monitor. Its not the most easy thing to do, and its not easy for me to explain all aspects of this in an short answer. So I was planning on writing an article about it and here it is, The article also includes how to setup max luminance for OLED TVs and why a small OLED TV is better than a gaming monitor for HDR. What made me write the article now, is that I just read a review of the LG G6 by AVForums (see link in the article). It showed that LG G6, like gaming monitors, and contrary to how OLED TVs usually is tuned, now outputs significantly lower brightness on a 10% window than on a 2% window (not as low as monitors). So it actually made me think about the general recommendation for setting up max luminance in games. And it has now from my point of view changed to using 2% brightness instead of 10% brightness, as a general rule of thump for OLED TVs. For monitors its still the same complicated issue. And please remember. I'm only a gamer like you. I don't know everything and I haven't tried all displays. I game on big TVs. So I'm interested in feedback. Its an article, so I can edit it as long as I want. Its the great thing about articles vs posts on X.

@HDRgameAnalysis a lot of the people who use it just install and play, they don’t touch any slider. Which in a bunch of games works fine ofc. But yeah they’ve been complaining on nexus saying the native HDR looks better lmao…

@Nealvy_ Are people complaining ? They can just adjust the settings in RenoDX to their own likings. I have all I need to make the game look good using RenoDX.

A little update to the settings I use myself in RenoDX in Death Stranding 2. Its what I recommend if you want beautiful black levels at night out in the open world. The game has a massive black level raise at night time out in the open world at standard RenoDX settings. The only thing I have changed in my recommendations is to increase saturation from 50 to 55 to gain back a small loss in color in some scenes. When changing luts we change how the developer has colored the game. Luts are basically the developers color filter on top of already existing naturel colors (thats how a non-developer and gamer like me understands it). These color filters some times lift black levels. There is nothing wrong with changing luts in my opinion. We gamers change and optimise lots of things to the visuels in games. Feel free to try it out and optimise for your own personal preference and viewing conditions. I game in a dimly lit room on a 77” 2000 nits capable OLED, so the settings is optimised for that. x.com/hdrgameanalysi…

When movement tech is something that isn’t part of the base game, it’s something not everyone is doing so casuals don’t complain about movement, taking it out just ruins a portion of the game at the top level without actually helping people who don’t do it since they never see it

QD-OLED or 3rd generation WOLED monitors. Which is better and things to think about when setting up HDR in games. youtu.be/Yx3mv9-_zSA?is… Monitor Unboxed has made this great video, that explains the differences. It shows 3rd generation WOLED monitors is best for these reasons: 1) Higher brightness on 10% window 2) No panel dimming in bright scenes 3) Blacks are not raised with light in the room QD-OLED do have better screen uniformity and better saturated colors, but brightness and black levels are king for best HDR. When we setup HDR in games, then its on a 10% window. Its because most bright highlights are in the 5-15% window size range. So 10% is industry standard. So for the 540hz WOLED monitor in picture 1 we would set max luminance in games to 783 nits and to 543 nits on the 500hz QD-OLED monitor. When we do that, then games will not output more than 783 nits or 543 nits respectively. Thats important to be aware of, because I see many tell me that their monitor is 1000 or 1500 nits WESA certified. Thats on a 2% window. In picture 2 we see that small highlights is much higher than 10%. So don’t look at the numbers for small highlights when buying a monitor. Don’t fall for the marketing. Look at what your monitor can do on 10% window sizes in the picture mode you expect to be gaming in. Picture 3 illustrates the actual output in real scenes (not test patters). All displays use ABL that dims both bigger bright objects and small highlights based on the heat/power budget a screen can handle. But this is not something we have to take into account when setting up HDR. Its because dimming don’t clip detail. It dims individual pixels proportionally (large part of the screen and/or small highlights). ABL dimming is not the same as clipping of highlights. A quick note on paper white or screen brightness. Most of these monitors can output and sustain a high enough full screen brightness. I would for most monitors set paper white to 180-200 nits. Read my article about paper white to get an understanding here-off.

I get that Kojima wants his games to feel like you’re playing a movie, but does that really mean we can’t get volume sliders for music, effects and dialogue? I can’t hear these damn whispers over the music man.

Imagine being a right wing party who are very anti immigration and shit and you have to specifically state you want people from your city “regardless of skin colour” to get priority for housing… fucking wild. Putting that in there somehow makes them sound far more racist.

Some facts for you: 1. Men built the game industry. 2. Men are the predominant demographic in the PC and console market (no matter what biased “studies” claim). 3. Men have the purchasing power that drives the market. 4. The most successful franchises in history were built for male players. 5. Ignore your core audience, and the industry pays the price. 6. Beauty sells. 7. Players, not consultants or 'community managers' decide what succeeds. 8. You're a 'community manager' and an 'indie dev' thanks to the industry and technology men built. Never forget that.

Look, We all know Expedition 33 is a masterpiece. But imagine if Lune had a tune up. Just a tiny bit. The game probably would’ve sold even more copies on top of every milestone it already hit. It's only a suggestion. No need to get all emotional about it.
