.@Jamaicaredcross, @mfaftja, and @ifrc on 24-25 March co-hosted a Roundtable on the new Treaty on Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters (PPED). Building on the Sendai Framework, the #PPEDTreaty is expected to reinforce a duty for disaster risk reduction (DRR), accelerate domestic DRR efforts and drive important legal & policy reforms at all levels. @mayorofmontegobay & @AndrewSwabyJA gave opening remarks to stress on the important role of local governments in DRR.

.@Jamaicaredcross response to #HurricaneMelissa set to get a boost as relief supplies for 600+ households are transported from @ifrc regional humanitarian hub in Panama to #Jamaica. A cargo plane of relief supplies will arrive on 1st November while a marine vessel with additional items will dock on 4th November.

Emergency Appeal Launched: Hurricane Melissa — the strongest storm in Jamaica’s history — has left a trail of devastation across the island. With winds up to 280 km/h and torrential rains, nearly 1.9 million people are affected. Homes destroyed, roads blocked, families displaced. The Jamaica Red Cross, with support from the IFRC, is on the ground delivering emergency shelter, food, clean water, and cash assistance. But the needs are immense. The IFRC has launched an emergency appeal for 19 million CHF to scale up life-saving aid and recovery efforts. This is a critical moment. .@Jamaicaredcross is scaling up its response on the ground a day after #HurricaneMelissa battered #Jamaica. Additional supplies are being mobilized to the affected areas with support of the @ifrc. The trail of destruction left by Melissa is slowly emerging: there has been a massive humanitarian impact, with livelihoods, shelter, and critical infrastructure damaged mainly in the west. Major humanitarian efforts are required.

Melissa is a life-threatening hurricane. According to NOAA forecasts, it is expected to make landfall in Jamaica early next week as a major Category 4 storm, potentially the strongest hurricane to ever strike the island in recorded history. With just 36 hours before Melissa makes landfall, preparation is the only way forward. Our local Red Cross teams across Jamaica are already on the ground, taking early action, supporting alerts and evacuations, and positioning relief for the most at-risk families. Melissa threatens communities still reeling from Hurricane Beryl, which devastated livelihoods just over a year ago. The @IFRC works to strengthen local-to-global capacities in risk reduction, early warning and early anticipatory action, and preparedness, so that the network can better manage the rising number of disasters. Anticipatory and local action save lives.

Tropical Storm Melissa continues to move across the central Caribbean, with meteorologists warning that it may soon intensify and pass near Jamaica as a powerful hurricane. Heavy rainfall is expected across Jamaica, as well as southern areas of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, through the weekend as the storm strengthens into a major hurricane by late Sunday. Our Red Cross teams have been mobilized across the region. The Jamaica Red Cross, with support from the @IFRC, has activated anticipatory action measures ahead of the arrival of Tropical Storm Melissa. An @IFRC_DREF was activated to support the @Jamaicaredcross in pre-positioning supplies and other preventive actions.

A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern #Afghanistan late on 31 August, causing widespread destruction across Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman provinces. A 100 days since the earthquake in Myanmar. A huge thank you to @MyanmarRedCross, who have worked tirelessly for 100 days to reach and support as many people as possible. And to the @ifrc team in Myanmar and beyond for doing all they can to support them. The work goes on.

.@MyanmarRedCross has reached 195,000 people since the earthquake with support from @ifrc and Movement partners. 13,000 with health care. 1.2 million litres of drinking water distributed. Thousands reached through construction of latrines, hygiene kits, and hygiene awareness.

The IFRC is actively supporting Myanmar’s earthquake relief efforts and has launched an emergency appeal for 100 million Swiss francs to assist 100,000 people with life-saving relief and early recovery support over the next 24 months. The IFRC is supporting the efforts of the @MyanmarRedCross which has mobilized hundreds of trained volunteers to provide immediate assistance. 📹 In #Afghanistan, the @ifrc together with @ARCSAfghanistan installed a Solar Pumping System to enhance resilience and support sustainable livelihoods. It provides reliable water, promotes smart agriculture, and fosters community ownership for long-term stability. 🌾💧

In 2024, @ifrc reached over 2.5 million people in Afghanistan yet barely scratched the surface of needs. Once again, this visit reminded me that despite its beauty and strength, Afghanistan remains one of the world's most enduring and tragic crises.

The fate of the 750 000 people who returned from Pakistan to Afghanistan last year is an untold story. They arrived with nothing, were given a little help at the border, and have been fending for themselves ever since. Amongst the ones I visited this week in Kandahar, malnutrition was rampant. They live in tents and abandoned houses. At best, they can hope for occasional daily labour. @ifrc is supporting @ARCSAfghanistan to run primary health clinics that serve some of their basic needs, but it is far from enough.
