@arthandle I think the main problem with Mike about Lucas isn't that he doesn't like him or his opinion Lucas is inferior to someone else, it's that most of his takes stated as facts are purely ahistorical.

@233Neon @Gabriel1847835 I literally just said show and not tell. Movies have been doing this for decades where they give you concise character and motivation backstory poor characters without just having someone stop and explain it to you. And they made you care. The prequels do not do any of that.

"Revenge for what?" This is a joke, right? The Jedi Council scene made it VERY clear that the Jedi were responsible for the extinction of the Sith. The Sith are ancient arch-enemies of the Jedi who want revenge for the Jedi almost destroying them. Did you guys watch the movie?

Ryan Rhodes ⚙️🧠@langofmind

He says the sith will have their revenge. Revenge for what? The Jedi are barely aware of them. The movie explicitly isn't about this, it's just a weird add-on that distracts from the actual conflict in a way that makes very little sense. Why am I seeing this??

It's such an obvious performative ritual. "If I mention Harry Potter, I must include a slight against the author, otherwise I will be damned". No explanation of which positions you are or aren't supporting. Just "I, too, know to say the thing"
cinesthetic.@TheCinesthetic

Andrew Garfield says he recently watched the Harry Potter films for the first time, but added: “we shouldn’t be putting money in the pocket of inhumane legislation right now through she that shall remain nameless.”

@johnddavidson The character of Caspian meant something very different in "The Silver Chair" than he had in "Prince Caspian" or "Dawn Treader," and that despite "Dawn" and "Chair" both featuring Eustace. If you dislike Colbert's politics, fine—that doesn't make him artistically incompetent.

Under the pen of someone like Stephen Colbert, who clearly doesn’t understand or doesn’t care about the moral vision at the heart of LOTR, the upcoming spinoff will almost certainly corrupt Tolkien’s work and reduce it to nothing more than pop culture slop.

@johnddavidson I honestly can't think of many people I would trust more to screenplay some extended stories based upon Tolkien's world than Colbert. The guy is a walking Tolkien encyclopaedia.

The “original superfans” of Tolkien’s LOTR were not neopagan-hippies but people like CS Lewis and WH Auden. The entire “LOTR is pagan” discourse is retarded—almost as retarded as Stephen Colbert’s idiotic idea for yet another half-baked LOTR spinoff. thefederalist.com/2026/03/27/hol…

@SimardPete @langofmind Clone Wars gave him generic "bad guy mastermind" personality and traumatic backstory. So no, I prefer enigmatic but menacing killing machine. We know as much about him just as the main heroes. And it would be stupid for Palpatine to instruct his apprentice to reveal Sith plans.

@langofmind Maul worked because he didnt need a monologue... pure threat, not a character study. Sometimes the villain just needs to walk through a door and make you go "oh no." Clone Wars proved he could carry depth too, but Phantom Menace Maul was enough as raw force.

@ThePurpIeKnight @langofmind RedLetterMedia addressed this in their very first TPM video, the original Star Wars told the hero's journey in a fairly cookie cutter way, but TPM took the hero's journey out and replaced it with nothing

It’s another one of those instances in which the words JK Rowling used to describe Emma Watson not that long ago are very much applicable here. Andrew Garfield is simply “ignorant of how ignorant he is.” And what is this “inhumane legislation” he’s talking about? Not wanting biological men to compete in sports like boxing against biological women is somehow a bad thing? It's inhumane? Andrew’s brain has been warped by Hollywood groupthink.
Oli London@OliLondonTV

Andrew Garfield takes jab at J.K. Rowling over her trans views; says he watches Harry Potter even though it’s “controversial.” “I know it’s controversial and we shouldn’t be putting money in the pocket of inhumane legislation right now through she that shall remain nameless…There are so many beautiful artists that worked on those films. I have a newfound appreciation for all of the artists.” Source: Variety

@Torgan616 The director of publishing at the time verified that she never told George about Palpatine’s clone and that he expressed post-hoc disapproval. She then surmises that he would have been furious with TROS. Listen at 12 minutes in. web.archive.org/web/2022081222…

People wonder why movies today are so darkly lit, and it's because we don't know how to light them like movies in the past. All the gaffers have retired or passed away, and there is no one left who knows how light works. Is it a particle or a wave? It's confusing.

The trade dispute in The Phantom Menace is a bit like the inciting incident of a detective-noir film like The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon, or Chinatown: a pretext that is a byproduct of a much larger scheme which soon takes precedence over it.
Alan Cole@AlanMCole

The point is often made imprecisely, I think. It would be possible to have an excellent movie about trade disputes. Unfortunately, the Phantom Menace doesn’t do that. It just handwaves at them as the reason for the plot to be happening.

Anyone that thinks Rian doesn't respect Luke Skywalker or George Lucas is lost. In fact, I'd say he understands both better than most fans... -He used George's ideas of Luke being a hermit and a reluctant hero. -He used his ideas that a young woman would seek his help. -He used his ideas that Luke restarted the Jedi, but it would be difficult. Everything he did honored the ideas of George and the lore from his films. He didn't make Luke get married and have kids, as George has stated. He didn't make Luke a superhero. He made Luke a legend at the end! When the galaxy needed him the most, he returned in triumphant fashion!

The Last Jedi and Rian Johnson are fundamentally misunderstood. This Lucasfilm 10 min documentary "Balance of the Force" accompanies the Digital/Blu-Ray releases and is a MUST WATCH! Rian's use of the lore from the Empire Strikes Back is spot on. ENJOY!
