This decision by HMRC does not surprise me. Angela Rayner got caught in an obscure part of the legislation and the fact that no penalty was levied indicates that HMRC agrees. It shows that people can correct their tax affairs without upset when they have done no wrong. Sometimes tax is complicated.

EXCL: Angela Rayner has been cleared by HMRC of deliberate wrongdoing or carelessness over her tax affairs, paving the way for a potential leadership bid if Keir Starmer’s grip on power unravels. The former DPM has settled £40,000 in unpaid stamp duty, but has not paid any penalty as a result of the investigation. HMRC was also satisfied there was no tax avoidance. Rayner tells me she was “bruised” by whole experience because of intrusion into her disabled son’s personal life, but also because it had appeared as though she was “in it for myself” rather than on the side of ordinary people. Rayner indicated she may run in event of a contest as she would “play my part” and that she understood why Labour MPs were so upset following last week’s election crushing. She said Starmer should “reflect on” stepping aside.

@wealthagent What is your problem exactly? You’re colleague mis-sold this crap in the first place and now you charge fees to ‘help’ people out of nightmare that your partner help create. If HMRC had dealt with it properly a +decade ago interest wouldn’t be an issue. Please just shut up.

Per HMRC 10,000 people had their tax liability reduced to £Nil. Others have up to £70k written-off their tax liability. Those out with the strict #loancharge terms have had no reduction at all. But LCAG can only focus on the £70k not being enough. What does that say about LCAG?

Loan Charge vs McCann Concession Excluding the interest payable, has anyone calculated a material difference in taxed owed between the two calculations? I have run some numbers and unless I have made a mistake, I don't see a material difference? #loanchargescandal

Main recommendations so far from #LoanChargeScandal review are: ◼️settlement should be final for all years DR schemes used ◼️10% of amount suspended for 1st £50k gross income for tax yr, 5% for between £50k & £150k ◼️Suspend late payment interest ◼️No penalties ◼️No IHT

Good to hear the Loan Charge scandal eventually getting government attention. However, this will be of little comfort to those who lost so much as a result of the HMRC’s punishing intransigence that sadly led to some choosing to take their own lives. #Budget2026
