15 years ago, North Carolina's 90 economically smallest counties accounted for a combined share of 40% of the state's whole gross domestic product (GDP). The biggest two counties - Wake and Mecklenburg - accounted for "just" 29% collectively. But by 2023, those proportions had flipped. These days, Wake and Mecklenburg now account for 38% - the biggest single share - of our state GDP. They've mostly taken share from those bottom 90 counties, whose share has shrunk 5 points to 35%. This is both because Wake and Mecklenburg's economies have grown so significantly, and also because almost every rural county in North Carolina (which make up almost that entire "bottom 90" list) has been in a permanent economic recession for this entire period.

@wxmanvic Here in southern wake county we had a few events that did drop 1+ of rain in Late Feb and in March plus 2 weeks ago in April. But it is stupid dry and ponds are drying up like I have never seen in 30 years just south of Raleigh.

#NorthCarolina with the driest October thru March on record, dating back to 1895. Yet, only 22% of the state is in extreme drought, compared to 70% for FL and GA, which each saw their 3rd driest such period. Is the drought in NC actually worse than depicted in the latest #USDM?

Us locals die on the inside every time we see a palm has replaced one of our beautiful oaks - and seeing them as far west as Cumberland county makes us go a little feral.
