I've been studying Georgia for about five years. I've never seen anything as unifying as the Patriarch's death. Everyone from Tbilisi anti-GD liberals to pro-GD commentators are speaking of Ilia in reverence. The processions are at a scale usually reserved for mass protests

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II, has been laid to rest at the Patriarchal Cathedral of Sioni. Patriarch Ilia II passed away on March 17 at the age of 93. He led the Georgian Orthodox Church for nearly half a century-49 years-making him the longest-serving patriarch since the restoration of the Church’s autocephaly in 1917. Following his passing, thousands of people gathered over five days at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, where he lay in state, to pay their final respects. Continuous lines of mourners formed as the faithful came to honor the late patriarch.
