@Nick_Castillo_ As a collector of typewriters, I urge you to try it out. It’s a whole different experience and you will be addicted. There’s a good shop in Boston somewhere, if I recall.

I'm rewatching All the President's Men, and great film and all, but i'm cringing at the thought of having to do any writing on a typewriter

@Nick_Castillo_ Doesn't surprise me. There remain contested historical memories from Poland's former eastern territories and UPA's symbolic rehabilitation. UPA conducted massacres of Poles during WW2.

The idea of moving US ballistic missile submarines around for signaling purposes is not exactly new. Just a year ago, in July 2024, a perfectly Nuclear Submarine USS Tennessee made a very visible visit to the Norwegian Sea (link in reply) 1/

@baklitskiy And, curious to hear your thoughts, but are submarines not second strike capabilities? This seems more of nuclear signaling than brinksmanship.

It’s hard to imagine this is happening, but here we are “U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in regions near Russia in response to threats from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev” reuters.com/world/trump-or…

@baklitskiy I agree with your sentiment. Logically, this is not conducive. But is not the utility of Trump’s action to test the empty rhetoric of Medvedev and thus give reason for the Kremlin to mute him if they are interested in de-escalation?

Every time I hear lamentations about the death of the post-1945 Liberal International Order (at the hands of the Russians and the Chinese), I am reminded of Paul Chamberlin's book, The Cold War's Killing Fields. Here's a useful passage from the book.

A hugely underrated statement here by Boris Yeltsin. This is from Jan. 14, 1994. Note the ambition.

Capped enrichment (below 5%) and stockpile limits with intrusive IAEA oversight can feasibly curtail Iran's nuclear breakout. Zero enrichment, while idealized by some, is a nonstarter that blocks realistic diplomacy and risks paving the way toward military confrontation.

As momentum builds and coalitions form to advance innovative approaches to nuclear energy, attempts to introduce plutonium fuels and reprocessing would be counterproductive. My full statement⤵️ nti.org/news/executive…

@baklitskiy CSTO’s credibility is questionable, especially when Moscow did not intervene in the 2016 Az-Arm clashes and made limited attempts to mediate Taj-Kg border tensions. So makes complete sense for KG to join the ranks of KZ to not rely on any Russian nuke umbrella

A very lowkey way to announce such a thing, but if followed through this will be the second Russia treaty ally after Kazakhstan joining TPNW
ICAN@nuclearban

In today's general debate at the #NPTPrepCom, Kyrgyzstan announced that “has made the political decision to join to the TPNW” because they are “committed to ensuring that future generations live without the threat posed by weapons of mass destruction.” 👏🇰🇬

Kazakhstan is putting national interest above OPEC+ quotas, and this could test the bloc’s unity. The country's Energy Minister, Yerlan Akkenzhenov, signals a shift in Astana’s oil policy.
