▶️ You will see Brexiteers cling to the argument that because the 🇬🇧 grew recently at a similar rate to 🇫🇷 and 🇩🇪 there is no Brexit damage. ▶️ But economists at @GoldmanSachs, @nberpubs and others are not measuring the outcome but rather modelling what 🇬🇧 itself would have achieved had it not done Brexit: i.e. no new trade barriers and no new red tape with our larges market. ▶️ Every serious organisation that has modelled this has found a significant and growing Brexit drag on where the 🇬🇧 economy like have been otherwise. ▶️ What they are saying is we’ve weakened the 🇬🇧 economy to be like 🇫🇷 and 🇩🇪 when we should be growing much faster. ▶️ This is what @nberpubs found in its 2025 paper — “The Economic Impact of Brexit” by Bloom, Bunn, Mizen, Smietanka & Thwaites: 1️⃣ “By 2025, Brexit had reduced 🇬🇧 GDP by 6% to 8%, with the impact accumulating gradually over time” 2️⃣ “Investment was reduced by between 12% and 18%” 3️⃣ “Employment by 3% to 4% and productivity by 3% to 4%” 4️⃣ “These forecasts were accurate over a 5-year horizon, but they underestimated the impact over a decade” “These large negative impacts reflect a combination of elevated uncertainty, reduced demand, diverted management time, and increased misallocation of resources from a protracted Brexit process.” ▶️ How much has this cost us by these calculations? Some £180–240 billion.

The EU has said there will be no special deal for the UK should it seek to rejoin. This means we will have to accept the Euro and drop the Pound, accept free movement, and pay billions in membership. Do Labour candidates really want this? theguardian.com/world/2026/may…

The UK allows many Europeans to stay for up to 6 months visa-free. British citizens in much of Europe are restricted by a shared 90-day Schengen allowance across 29 countries. That imbalance surprises a lot of people.

Myth busting: • Euro membership is purely a notional commitment for new members: Poland has not joined the Euro and never will. The UK could keep the Pound like the Zloty as long as it wanted — and that could be forever.

@vivamjm It'll be interesting to see whether, unlike Starmer with the foolish red lines, Burnham avoids explicitly ruling out SM/EEA + a CU. If he 'only' rules out "rejoining the EU" during this parliament, that would still leave the Norway/Swiss options on the table.

First serious mistake by Andy Burnham. He’ll come across as un-authentic and a less principled candidate. If you believe in something, why U-turn now? Also, this won’t stop Reform attacking him on Brexit. Quite the contrary.

We have now reached the stage where politicians pretend that they are respecting working-class voters by lying to them. If they were honest, they'd tell the truth and say that Brexit can't be made to work and it is patronizing to pretend otherwise
