@405Automation @GianfrancoShoIa Well yes, but it's very hard to disentangle your performance drop (or lift) when you lose the player who basically dictates your whole team performance than one who is an awkward fit but talented. It's hard to know what lesson there is to learn of just "buy good players".

@NickySillett @GianfrancoShoIa It's more a point around making the right signings with money. No one can argue that the Bale money was spent on quality players that worked out. Hard to argue that any outside of Erikswn were worth the money paid. Liverpool absolutely nailed that.

Surley that is Gordon gone then? Given how things played out with Isak, the fact he has "agreed terms" with Bayern must mean we have given some kind of approval for those conversations to happen right? Just comes down to price now, have to hope that doesnt take ages #nufc

@405Automation @GianfrancoShoIa But the huge difference between those two examples was that Bale was entirely propelling Tottenham's form. Coutinho was actually being marginalised in the direction they were going under Klopp and becoming a more and more awkward fit in the team.

@GianfrancoShoIa I really wish I could get excited for this summer but I just can't. You have two routes when a big player is sold - Liverpool after selling Coutinho Spurs after selling Bale The Isak sale reinvestment was very Spurs after Bale. I fear this will be no different. #nufc

@Zonal_Marking I think we need a third domestic cup that is purely as drama-focused as it can be. Goals get progressively bigger over 90 mins. Missing a chance over an xG of 0.4 results in a transfer to the opposition. Final goes straight to penalties. Mid-match guest appearances in goal!

Strongly disagree with this - it differentiates the competition from the FA Cup, and is the round of either cup which is the most unique. The two cup competitions are absolutely fine, I’m not sure why there’s always so much debate about how to “modernise” them.
Ian Darke@IanDarke

League Cup semis would be more dramatic as one-off games. The two-leg format works in European games , but feels outdated in domestic cups. Both teams anxious to stay in tie.

@pkwestel I could charitably understand the reasoning about letting Welbeck too early when he put Man Utd out of the FA Cup QF the following season after leaving. But is the implication here that Man Utd should have held onto him for over a decade just to score in a 3rd round FA Cup tie?

Danny Welbeck has scored 59 PL goals in the 11 years since leaving Utd (5.34 per year!) Evans spent most of his career playing for lower mid/lower table clubs. It's worked out great for McTominay but Utd were right to sell There's dross and then there's this dross. Reaching
James Ducker@TelegraphDucker

Amid the many recruitment woes since 2013, United have demonstrated a troubling tendency to hold on for too long to players they should not have kept (Martial, Lindelof, Rojo, Jones etc) & sell prematurely those they should have retained (Welbeck, Evans, Carreras & McTominay etc)

@pkwestel Have to say, the "INEOS know sport" thing has always been a bit overblown by I think a lot of friendly relations with sports journalists. They took over a successful Sky cycling team and got worse, fell out with UK's best sailor to tank that team and never improved Nice.

@pkwestel Even if he was right, unless you have carte blanche to remove everything you don't like, you're criticising the people who will actually action the stuff you want to do. After that, Howe rallied the team, won a trophy+qualified for UCL and Mitchell was gone before the summer. 2/2

@pkwestel There was an interesting parallel when Paul Mitchell came in as DoF at Newcastle and promptly started saying our recruitment was not fit for purpose. Alienated everyone underneath him because it had previously been a collective effort between manager and recruitment team. 1/2

@umirf1 @DanR902 @sistoney67 Is the INEOS data team at the point Liverpool's was 15 years ago when they thought buying Downing for his highest numbers of crosses and Carroll for his heading ability would automatically = goals?

I assume there's a more rigorous process than that but I will look to Ugarte as someone who looked incredible in the data and contextually his flaws at that time still exist for United. Good data should hold less weight as an individual thing. It should flag up talent but there's lots to do after that.

From @sistoney67, club sources stating United's data analysis brought to light the below qualities as impressive statistically for Lammens. That's all well and good but some of it lacks context going only off the numbers. Making the most progressive passes for GKs U23 just means he passed it forward the most, doesn't evaluate how difficult the passes, how well they were executed, or under how much pressure (it was minimal). Claimed crosses stat is impressive (most crosses stopped as a % in Europe) but with context this is because he is very proactive, comes out and claims lots of easier crosses confidently in open play but struggles at corners. There's pros and cons and the data itself without close video analysis misses the cons. Lack of mistakes made again as a raw stat doesn't take into consideration the reduced pressure GKs in that league face. The keeper might be going long very often under pressure rather than building out from the back which may be less ideal than someone who is great in short build up but would make a couple errors a season. It has to all be contexualised.

@Ic3Evaa Worth remembering that he was pretty inconsistent he was in that first year. Was outscored by Callum Wilson, despite both having injury issues. As with many of his players, Howe gave him the best possible platform to perform.

@pkwestel Villa even had a false start in there with significant investment under Gerrard that wasted a whole year. Newcastle and Villa have both gone quickly from relegation contenders to CL places on similar trajectories following wise, significant investment (and good coaching).

United fans lamenting how far off the club are just remember Aston Villa were nearly (should have been) relegated five years ago and then sold their best player and look where they are It's do-able. You just have to make smart decisions and move on from mistakes quickly

@louorns @Zonal_Marking Arguably Torres was shoe-horned in to the first few XIs of Euro 2012 despite being dreadful for the preceding season and it broadly worked out fine.

@Zonal_Marking There are also lots of examples where they haven’t. Kante for France in 2016, Torres for Spain in 2012, Cazorla/Mata etc barely saw the pitch, Fabregas was a bit part player in 2008 — I can go on. Foden does not need to start for England

Until England realise they don’t have to shoehorn Foden into XIs, they’ll never win anything. It’s ok to use elite players sporadically when you’re a top nation. Saliba didn’t play in the WC final, Nesta didn’t get on the pitch in 06, Del Piero barely featured, same with Kaka etc

@Edit_Kev It's from Jonathan Wilson's latest UnHerd article. It's more about the clubs losing faith in the league being unable to self-govern if City are either found not guilty or not punished severely enough.

@GraceOnFootball But it's just a knockout game. It seems weird to describe a set of play-off knockout games as being materially different to the knockout stages.

The play-offs is not the same thing as "going through". They're going to play either Real Madrid or Bayern, both of whom have been better than City this season. Of course they could still win, but those are real stakes.
Rob 🅼@Im_RobM

City going through in the Champions League after winning 3 games in 8 against Bratislava, Sparta Prague and Brugge. The new format is still shite and I won't hear any differently. The safety net is far too big.

@amonizfootball @ryderTHFC @AvyuktK Not to mention you can earn a profit from this deal *if* it so happens that he is not good enough after 3 years if you sold him for 15m. ~amortization~ Which would make this a good deal even if it doesn’t work out (which for that to happen he has to be worse than our backup WB)

Won't have time to do a special pod to celebrate, so I'll say this: if another PL club got Dorgu for this fee in this window I would have been very annoyed about it. Big talent with many of the early signs that United have gotten him before the value/price became super steep
Fabrizio Romano@FabrizioRomano

🚨🔴 Patrick Dorgu to Manchester United, here we go! Verbal agreement in place with Lecce, documents to be checked in next 24h. Fee will be €30m plus €5m in add-ons not guaranteed. Long term contract agreed days ago with the player… …and first signing for Rúben Amorim. 🤝🏻

@pkwestel My main experience of Ugarte was watching him against Newcastle in the CL for PSG. Looked totally bullied by the physical side of the game and you worry if it's one of those things where he looks like a great destroyer in less physical leagues but found wanting in the PL.

Ugarte only played 90 minutes vs Arsenal. Doesn't even have the whole had to play extra time excuse the way some other players had to. It's a problem!
