The 95% Myth: While statista.org reports that South Africa's adult literacy rate is roughly 90–91%, it also shows that only 30% of Grade 1-3 learners in 2026 can read at grade level, indicating a profound crisis in functional literacy that a simple "read/write" percentage does not capture.
So what Africa considers "litreracy," wouldn't even qualify as being literate in the West.

No, Amazon Leo (formerly Project Kuiper) is not exactly the same as Starlink.
Starlink has ~10,000+ operational satellites, live consumer service in 100+ countries (including mobile/ maritime), near-global coverage, and proven real-world speeds/latency.
Amazon Leo has ~100-300 satellites, commercial rollout just starting in 2026 (mostly backhaul via partners like Vodacom/Vanu in SA/Africa), fewer sats, higher orbits, and more limited coverage initially. Different scale, timelines, and focus.

So many people I know have been murdered back home in South Africa - or if they’re ‘lucky’ just attacked or robbed.
But this one is utterly senseless.
I grew up with Bruce in Johannesburg. He wouldn’t have hurt a fly. Violence has become so gut-wrenchingly commonplace -but that this genuinely good and kind man was beaten to death in his own home is very very very hard to comprehend.
Unfathomable. Heartbreaking. Utterly shameful

Release the sex offenders' list now South Africa has a National Register for Sex Offenders. On paper, it is meant to protect the vulnerable. In practice, it operates behind closed doors. Ordinary citizens cannot access it. Parents cannot check it. Communities cannot use it to make informed decisions about who works with their children. Who is this government trying to protect? And whose names sit on that register, names some would rather keep hidden? The time has come to make this register public. Until that happens, a troubling question will remain: whether the state is safeguarding the vulnerable, or shielding offenders at their expense. I spent ten years immersed in the horrific world of child sex abuse.
