@halvorsen My bratty teenager and I volunteered as poll workers on Tuesday. Six hours into our shift she turned to me and said “who knew it would actually feel so good to help people?” Proud mama moment! My current goal is to make sure my little ones enter the world as kind adults. ❤️

the most useful advice I received after the 2016 election was -- to combat the coming chaos and cruelty and tactics to make you feel powerless & overwhelmed -- was to pick one cause I care about and direct my time, money, and/or resources towards it. the more local, the better.

It pains me to report that I am sadly included in another round of layoffs at @WTOP. Times are tough in radio, but I'm truly grateful for the past 16 years. If anyone knows of any jobs (inside or outside of journalism/film) let me know. Thanks for listening over the years!

I know 2 things about journalism:
-it is a privilege and often a delight to learn about people, places and things, and share that knowledge in the hopes of connecting and informing people
-this industry will put your care and sweat in a blender so idiots can pour it down a drain

I was also laid off today from WAMU and DCist. The past two years were my second stint at both, and presented me with my dream job of editing local arts and food stories that tried to portray the real culture of D.C. I'll miss that work and my colleagues terribly.

here's a plot twist: my layoff has been reversed. i am keeping my job at the LA Times.
so grateful to everyone who supported me during these past few weeks. though the future of journalism may be uncertain, i'm thankful to be able to do this work for at least one day more 🙌
