OFFICIAL RECORD: A 6.14 inch hailstone recovered in Kankakee on Tuesday afternoon is the new Illinois state record! It was recovered by the Denault Family. Victor Gensini, a severe weather researcher at Northern Illinois University, drove to Kankakee and collected and measured the stone. It will be 3D scanned Monday by researchers with the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. The Illinois State Extremes Committee will, according to Gensini, be voting on whether to certify the findings, but that’s largely a formality at this point. Unfortunately, reports of 6.5 to 8 inches hail will remain unofficial, since none were reliably photographed or saved for measurement. @MatthewCappucci’s hailstone, at 5 inches in diameter, will also be 3D scanned but will not be a record. The former Illinois state record of 4.75 inches was measured with a stone that fell near Minooka, IL, in Grundy County on June 10, 2015.
