If your client says "make it pop" — they don't want more effects. They want clarity. Ask what's confusing them, not what looks cooler.

Match cuts are underused because they're hard to plan. Start noticing shape, motion, and color continuity between shots. It's the difference between clips and a sequence.

Watch a movie with your eyes closed. If you can still follow the story from sound design and pacing alone, that editor did their job. That's the bar.

The best editors aren't the fastest at Premiere/ Davinci shortcuts. They're the ones who know which 3 seconds to cut from a 10 second clip. Software is 20% of the job.

J-cuts and L-cuts aren't fancy techniques — they're the default. If your dialogue cuts are hard cuts on both audio and video, your edit feels amateur before anyone knows why.

Your rough cut should be ugly. If you're perfecting color and sound design before the story works, you're editing backwards. Structure first, polish last.

Most editors think better software = better edits. Wrong. I've seen editors do more with free CapCut than others do with a full Adobe suite. The software is just the pen. Stop chasing tools. Start chasing taste.
