@johncrickett Loved VB6. Cut my teeth on TRS-DOS Basic, then Pascal, Cobol, some 4GL database work, C++ and VB in college, then VB6 for 14 years or so before I went into more of the design side of things.

@MatthewBerman I currently have a Samsung S34J55x flat 34" monitor. I'm thinking about upgrading to this.... LG DualUp Monitor. One monitor with room for two widescreen views stacked.

LMGTFY very well might change from "Let me google that for you" to "Let me generate that for you" for the people too lazy to prompt an LLM instead of asking a question. @lmgtfy

@OpenAIDevs Found out. Settings -> Appearance -> Pets is at the bottom. Now here's the key. 1. Tuck your pet away, if you have one. 2. Click on the pet you want to wake and make sure it says "Selected" 3. Then wake pet.

Is AI actually helping us solve problems, or are we just addicted to the slot-machine dopamine hit of the prompt box?

@thsottiaux @johnpalmer @skybysoftware I've been coding a long time, but the first thing I thought of when I saw Codex was a big ole book of magic spells. Then again, I played a lot of D&D as a kid, so there's that....

@johnpalmer @skybysoftware Really think you associate codex with code because you are primed to do that and have a bias due to technical background. Let’s see.

“codex is for everyone, for any task done with a computer” but the name includes “Code,” and the app icon is a command line. very curious about the product / naming strategy here. can’t tell if it’s A) a deliberate separation of 2 products where the new one is for a different, more “pro” audience, AND where OpenAI specifically does not benefit from leveraging familiarity with ChatGPT’s brand. or B) there’s a desire to pull off a sneaky rename, where Codex also reaches mainstream adoption and replaces ChatGPT for everything (which would conveniently retire both the confusing “GPT” name and the “chat” anchoring, which might feel outdated in a more agentic world that goes beyond just chatting. or more realistically, C) codex started as an experiment, and then was just a more natural place for shipping these agentic features because it doesn’t simultaneously need to support 1B users, and it’s all just moving quickly, and shipping fast is what matters most. and the name just is what it is because it started as a coding tool. which is probably the most likely scenario.

@thsottiaux Not anymore. I mostly write specs and manage our automated testing. I went from coder to PM to software architect to tech lead to running automated testing. So yeah, it's been a few years since I wrote production code.

@kentcdodds I'm building my own tools for my own use. APIs go in first to make sure everything works then the UI layers on to match.

Really starting to get irritated by services I use not being agent ready. I'm not talking about MCP necessarily. I'm talking about not even having an API of any kind. So irritating!

@dhh Man, I used to buy specific editions because of the physical junk like maps and statues. Throw in a cheap piece of burlap vaguely made to look like a wall map or a dinky keychain and you could squeeze another $20 out of me back in the day.

Half the joy of collecting retro gaming is the box art, the cartridges, the artifacts. We've lost something important giving up on those physical manifestations of software. Comeback?

from a UI/UX perspective, how can i drive home the "money-back guarantee"? this is for rumored.ai which won't have a free plan (there's real cost associated with doing the monitoring) but i also want to make our refund/money-back guarantee VERY obvious/generous.

I use both. In normal practice, I'll write up the specs, requirements catalog, etc and feed it to Codex in one huge chunk. That goes into Codex to build the plan. Once the plan is underway, I then queue up my typical cleanup block like "Ensure code coverage is at 100% for unit testing, integration testing, security testing, and UI testing." That way when I get back to the code, it's ready to test hands on, make adjustments, then move on to the next. I use steering for cases when I can see it's ready to go off on a rabbit trail like "It looks like you're stuck. Are you stuck? Step back and re-examine." Steering the conversation at that point can head off a token expensive unnecessary excursion, or keep it from inventing something new when you already have a pipeline in place, for example.
