No country’s record on human rights is stellar and that’s not to take away from ours or to critique it and stand up against injustice - like so many of us do. But this charade that Europe is better than us or entitled to question us - with probably the most morally vacuous foreign policy and a continent whose economy, infrastructure and prosperity was built on loot is pushing it. If the principle is human rights then let’s apply it equitably. No nation can ride the white horse or the high horse. The reverse of the argument that they are better now, so their sins are washed is reductionist.
Saket Gokhale@SaketGokhale

We’re defending our “glorious” record on human rights abroad just 24 hours after the Supreme Court criticized its own verdict denying bail to Umar Khalid who has been jailed for over 5 years without trial. There are chief ministers who campaigned in recent elections while making the most vicious remarks targeting religious minorities. In Bengal, over 2.7 million valid voters were denied their basic right to vote in elections last month. Religious politics over food and dietary habits is being unleashed across the country. Sure, we can try to fool the world with carefully scripted diplomatic readouts but the truth cannot be hidden so easily.

I would agree with Ms Lyng here. I have had the opportunity of tough questioning top European and US diplomats at climate negotiations on their claim to morality and the distance between the claims and their actions. Most would not answer anything material. Several did so by sophistry and digression (diplomacy training teaches you how to), some with rudeness and others with arrogance. When I persisted and cut them short to bring them to the point, most would get irritated and it was always revealing of the individual and of their country's weak spots and doublespeak. Some would be smarter to distract with politeness or a light joke. Remember a top UK diplomat when asked a question repeatedly that put his country in a spot, said, "You can ask that of course. But I will decide if the needs to answer you or not." behind his smile one could see anger and irritation at being cornered. He later laced it with a threat on his way out catching me in the corridor, 'you might believe it's a good question, but I wondered if it's good for you to ask it.' It was a jab that told me the question should be pursued to see what UK did on that count behind closer doors. In one case an EU ambassador was excessively curt and his comms guy came after to indirectly apologise and try to build a working relationship of distrust. All par for course. Our diplomat did sound boorish and not so good at distracting away from a pertinent question in Norway. He could have done better. The journalist did well to keep him on the spot.

Journalism is sometimes confrontational. We seek answers. If any interview subject, especially with power, do not answer what I asked, I will try to interrupt and get a more focused response. That is my job & duty. I want answers and not just talking points.

Travelling from one side of #Manipur to another, you encounter a "buffer zone" — with Assam Rifles, CRPF, Army, BSF, Manipur Police check posts — then an arduous journey into areas where access through the National Highway has become precarious. Three years on — old divisions remain while new ones appear in the terrain.

Absolute shamelessness. @republic claiming @mihirsv investigative work as their own exclusive. Republic TV doesn't allow its correspondents to step even an inch beyond cricket reporting so how the hell are you guys coming up with breaking & exclusive stories?

More than half a year, half a dozen drafts, and tens of RTI requests/appeals later, we pieced together what we believe is a fairly comprehensive picture of the Indian pharmaceutical opioid trade to West Africa and the extent of the public health harm it is causing.
AFP News Agency@AFP

Millions of tapentadol tablets from India are helping drive a deadly opioid epidemic ravaging the region, with officials and researchers telling AFP that they are also being added to the "zombie drug" kush. The cheap pills are so strong that no regulatory authority in the world has approved them AFP INVESTIGATION : u.afp.com/SRQk

Ram Dev bought a lot of land in the Aravali forest using shell companies. Under the DPDP Act you’ll need his consent to name him in the scam. Read our earlier report naming him and his friends in the scam: reporters-collective.in/trc/baba-ramde…

How hard could it have been for CBI to identify Delhi policemen who killed Faizan during the Delhi violence. Our colleague @TweetSumedha summarises her investigation into how CBI failed to do it's job 👇.
Sumedha@TweetSumedha

You might not know Faizan. But you might remember a video, of cops kicking and thrashing five men lying injured on the road, forcing them to sing the national anthem during the 2020 Delhi violence. We @reporters_co accessed the CBI chargesheet filed. A thread. 🧵

Manipur: Ambush on Church Leaders and Allegedly, Reported Abductions On May 13, 2026, a significant escalation of violence occurred in the Kangpokpi and Senapati districts, involving targeted attacks and reports of civilian abductions. Lethal Ambush: In a violent incident between Kotlen and Kotzim on the Tiger Road, three senior leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA)—Rev. V. Sitlhou, Rev. Kaigoulun, and Pastor Paogoulen—were killed when their vehicles were intercepted by armed attackers of the ZUF-Kamson faction and VBIGs as alleged by the Kuki bodies. Several others were critically injured. Reported Abductions: Following the ambush, allegedly, approximately 20 individuals from the Liangmai community were allegedly abducted by unidentified armed groups near Konshakhul. ZUF Denial: The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has formally denied involvement in the ambush, rejecting allegations from the Kuki Inpi Manipur that linked the outfit to the strike. Civil Unrest: In protest of the killings, total shutdowns have been enforced in Churachandpur (Lamka) and Kangpokpi by the KSO and Thadou civil bodies, leading to a complete halt in commercial and transport activities. Security Response: Assam Rifles and State Police have launched intensive search-and-rescue operations and increased area domination patrols to prevent further ethnic violence and secure the release of those allegedly held captive. Security forces remain on high alert to stabilize the volatile tribal corridors and prevent any retaliatory strikes between communities.
