very good player. Still have concerns about him as an athlete & how it impacts future transfer work, but he & Senesi up our passing quality in deeper areas considerably.

@LilywhiteLab In De Zerbi’s ideal brand of football, turning in midfield under pressure is seen as too high risk. Turning over the ball in this area is viewed as far too dangerous to take the risk and so his tactics look to platform players so they don’t have to.

@hbrooks_coach De Zerbi does his absolute best to create mechanisms so that his midfielders don’t have to turn under pressure. Has a great two hour interview on YT where he talks about it at length. But this is a decent clip of the thought process. He’s top at platforming his cm’s🔝

How often was that deep lying stuff receiving away from pressure facing the opposition goal? Not saying it was or wasn’t, I’m asking. Because that requires a very different skillset… Which you could then say “well get him to drop like he used to”. But you have Porro, Senesi and it seems Van Hecke so what a waste that will be. So you’ll want him receiving higher on the turn and able to get the ball under pressure, on the turn and still manage to find the most offensive pass, which is something I’m not sure I’ve seen him do, and our other midfielders also struggle with… See the issues I’m talking about ?

@LilywhiteLab I think I understand our different perspectives on this now tbh, you’re coming from the perspective of an ex-player and so analyse based off that view point whereas I’m analysing from the coaches perspective and entirely on their fit for De Zerbi. Both valuable perspectives🤝
