No multi-paragraph manifesto. No “St George’s Day is a celebration. St George’s Day is a protest against forgetting who we are.” No “my heart was bursting as thousands waved the flag of the country that employs me.” Just the bare minimum. Drop the flag. Drop the words. Move on. Duty done. Christmas. She posts pictures of local trees. Nice trees. Operation Elf for the kids. “Happy Christmas Eve.” Sweet. Community-minded. But the heart stays firmly inside the ribcage. No declarations that Christmas is still very much needed. No “I am and always will be a proud ally to people who put up decorations and eat too much.” Just trees. Remembrance Sunday. She goes to the parade. She attends the service. She says the right respectful things about sacrifice and never taking it for granted. Honourable. Correct. Then she posts it like a civic obligation fulfilled. No rainbow of feelings. We’ve taken one of the most poisonous words of the twentieth century and turned it into a participation trophy for hurt feelings. Next week they’ll call forgetting someone’s preferred breakfast cereal ethnic cleansing. The language is dead. We killed it. We stuffed it full of new meanings until it blew apart and now we’re walking around in the mess pretending it’s progress. Then the borders thing. “End all borders and nations!” They’re shouting this in London. London. One of the most watched, regulated, passport-checked, camera-covered cities on the planet. They’re demanding the end of nations while the Metropolitan Police form a polite human fence around them so the wrong free-speechers don’t get close. The contradiction is thick enough to spread on toast. This isn’t liberation. It’s another interest group that figured out if you yell “fascist” loud enough, people back off and hand you the sidewalk. King spends the back half of the speech painting vivid pictures of little Black boys and girls joining hands with little white boys and girls, of former slaves and slave owners’ descendants sitting at the same table, of freedom ringing from every state. That wasn’t throwaway poetry or a mere consequence. It was the concrete vision of what fulfilled equality looked like in daily American life. Pretending the nearly three-minute “Dream” section is somehow subordinate to the check metaphor, or that people focusing on it are “sanitizing” King, is the real selective reading. King put both in the same speech for a reason. He leans hard on later King (Poor People’s Campaign, “Where Do We Go From Here,” economic justice, the “triple evils”) to argue the 1963 vision was always mainly about economic restructuring and that early desegregation wins were cheap and insufficient. Fair enough that King radicalized further and criticized the limits of formal equality without economic change. Young folks, don’t get it twisted. Integration was never the main focus of the Civil Rights Movement. That’s the fairytale. The Movement was about Black folks getting our Constitutional Rights. Dr. King addressed this in the first part of his, “I Have a Dream” speech.
