“Last March, a fog took hold in my head and never left. It settled there somewhere between the moment a DHS agent asked me, ‘Are you Mahmoud Khalil?’ and the moment I realized that I would miss the birth of my first child,” writes Khalil. A year ago, the Trump administration unlawfully arrested Khalil at his home and detained him for 104 days. “I walk free now, only after an army of lawyers sued the administration for targeting me because of my pro-Palestine speech. But the government is relentless in targeting me,” he writes. “So when I walk, I watch my back.” “When strangers approach me and ask, ‘Are you Mahmoud Khalil?’ — the same words in the same expectant tone the DHS agent used before the handcuffs — I do not know if they want to shake my hand or spit in my face. I do not know whether they will say, ‘Thank you for what you're doing,’ or follow me through midtown aggressively shouting, ‘Am Yisrael Chai.’ Both have happened. At first glance, I can never tell them apart.” In a new essay, Khalil writes about grappling with these two truths: “That I walk through the city afraid and that the city, in small and persistent ways, tells me I am welcome. That I am watched and that I am seen.” Read it in full: nymag.visitlink.me/tM03B5

In an aside, Mahmoud Khalil mentions yet more jaw-dropping, inhumane, disgraceful actions from Columbia University. Claire Shipman and colleagues, how do you sleep at night?

Everyone should stop what they're doing and read this deeply heartbreaking and incredibly powerful new essay from Mahmoud Khalil about his old life -- the one he had before the Trump administration began unjustly targeting him. nymag.com/intelligencer/…

Completely agree with President Trump’s assessment that the blockade of Iranian oil shipments is brilliant in concept and execution. The economic pressure on Iran is beyond real. However, we can’t forget who we’re dealing with here. The regime could care less about its people and will continue to challenge President Trump and the world. I still support a diplomatic conclusion to the Iranian conflict that will achieve the stated purpose of changing Iran’s behavior so it will never be able to acquire a nuclear weapon and will not be allowed to go back to its old ways of terrorizing the region and the world. Simply put, a diplomatic solution that makes Iran more normal and less crazy would be welcome. A diplomatic solution does, however, require willing partners, which seems to be missing in the case of Iran. With that in mind, I would urge President Trump to strongly push to open the Strait of Hormuz to more international shipping, improving the world economy and reducing Iran’s leverage. If Iran continues to be provocative toward the world and the United States, we should never hesitate to use whatever military means necessary to neutralize this threat. Ultimately, it is my hope that when we resolve the Iranian issue, we can go back to seeking peace between Saudi Arabia and Israel, the biggest prize in over 2,000 years. To secure nominalization between these two countries, it is imperative that Iran be put in a box, so they can never generate another October 7. I believe that goal is not only within sight, but it’s very close.

We’ve learned two things from our conflict with Iran: 1. If you turn the other cheek with Iran, they’ll stab you in the neck. 2. President Trump has oranges the size of beach balls.

Where does war end & where does it begin to lose its meaning? In my new piece for Modern Diplomacy, I reflect on the Strait of Hormuz not just as a chokepoint, but as a question. What happens when war starts to outgrow politics? moderndiplomacy.eu/2026/04/30/the…

What the IDF is doing in southern Lebanon: 1) Killing women and children so that families have to leave their homes. 2) Going into those homes to loot them and take humiliating videos. 3) Mocking and destroying their religious symbols. 4) Razing their homes to the ground so they can never return. This is the horrific behavior that created groups like Hezbollah to begin with. How can you blame people for hating and resisting this?

We completed the investigation at Minab school, so Donald Trump doesn't have to. Triple tap U.S Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired on a busy school day. Many children were still alive after the first strike. As some tried to flee, they were targeted again - this time with teachers and parents too. This can only be described as evil crimes against children and humanity.

"The main cause of antisemitism in the world today is the fact that the Israeli state claims to represent all Jews and is committing a genocide in Gaza, in the name of all Jews. Israel has the Star of David on its tanks and planes whilst it is killing women and children in Gaza, it’s stirring up antisemitism all the time" Mark Etkind, son of a Holocaust survivor:
