AOC: What is extremely disturbing about what has happened in Virginia is this court overturned the will of three million Virginians. They can say what they want about the ballot initiative, but they explicitly chose to issue this ruling after the election happened. They had all the time in the world to issue an opinion or an injunction before allowing this election to happen. They did not overturn a map—they overturned an election. It is the power of the American people that should be the ultimate check on all three branches. The court’s ability to overturn an election that was clear in its result should be something that is called into question.

But when Republicans want to ram through Congressional maps designed to dilute Black voting power and shut out Black candidates, the courts turn a blind eye.  Republicans have become the party of Jim Crow 2.0, and our judicial system is letting it happen. Here’s the deal: Abigail Spanberger, Don Scott, Louise Lucas and all their friends knowingly violated the Virginia Constitution. They purposefully violated clear constitutional procedures to deceive voters, capping off their master deception with ballot language meant to confuse everyone. They strongly argued for the VA Supreme Court to “wait” until after the referendum so their flood of money from national democrats could fund their brazen dishonesty and trick voters to “restore fairness”, and then claim “the will of the people” when the VA Supreme Court would undoubtedly strike down their unconstitutional attempt to disenfranchise millions of Virginians. It’s a disgusting disregard for Virginians, the Constitution and a flagrant violation of their oath of office.

@blkprofcct This post is stupid…the Supreme Court ruling was correct. VRA section 2…you can’t deny or abridge the right to vote based on race or color. That means black or white you can’t build districts based on race. There’s nothing preventing minority candidates from running.

The fact that almost EVERY former confederate state is moving to completely eliminate Black representatives almost immediately after the SCOTUS decision should be more than enough proof that voting rights still need protection and racism is far from gone in this country.

It is important to note Texas is redistricting mid cycle due to court challenges stemming from the 2021 redistricting following the 2020 census.

Until the Democrats in the state violated the state constitution on multiple counts to try and force through this. Currently it’s 6-5 which fits the 52-48% split Dems to Reps. This Gerrymandered map would make it 10-1.
