The later Crusading armies were also willing to work with minority sects of Islam like the Alawites or in one case a Buddhist Mongol Khan in order to fight the great Islamic powers.

It was an attempt to take back homelands.
If we were to "convert" through violence or intimidation, it would not be legitimate, there would be no purpose to it and it would be evil.
