I didn't say it wasn't worth doing what was necessary to have energy and security independence, I said that abandoning the USA now leave us open to being proper fucked by our neighbours, for at least the next 30 years.

We don't even have enough ammunition and bodies to fight off a determined invasion force for the three weeks it would take a US carrier group to mobilise and travel from Pearl Harbor to fight them off on our behalf

@NonIndutiae @hell_line0 Yes. I was working in a transcription pool. There were shifts at that time. They actually had a 24 hour coverage. Lots of associates stay at the downtown law firms until 1 or 2 a m. Some just sleep on their couches. No kidding.

being in china makes it clear that so much of UI/UX has been extremely contingent. the typical design patterns are really just fashion choices chinese design is very different: - way more features (wechat has chat, pay, train tickets, stories, stocks, rent bikes, healthcare, etc. / the food app will let you translate the menu, which uber eats *still* won’t let you do) - less polish (data loads aren’t as optimized, very few animations, pixels are more plain) - didi does payment *after* the ride, and gives you more flexibility than uber - tables at restaurants have a QR code that opens up chinese uber eats & selects that specific table as the delivery address. from there you can just order to your table instead of talking to a person - payments is done via apps with QR codes, not virtual credit cards with NFT chips. makes it feel strange that Apple Pay just… ported over credit cards to smartphones?? so arbitrary!

Yep. One day I was leaving the law firm I worked a 3 to 11 shift. I saw what I presumed was a stewardess rolling her bag to the same bus stop i was going to.
We had ten minutes to chat. I asked her where she was goinG. She told me the 528 bridge. I wasn’t familiar so I asked her to repeat it. Then I found out she was a receptionist at the law firm I worked for. The blue suit was for a law firm.
She said she had left an abusive situation and rent and utilities were about 3000 and she did t have it. So until she could save her Pennies she was living under a bridge.
And that dispelled any of my beliefs about homelessness. It has nothing to do with iq or work ethic. Homelessness goes across the board.
