Airborne graves from the early phase of the Normandy Landings dominate this burial ground at Ranville War Cemetery, in a village at the heart of the D-Day Drop Zones in 1944. #DailyBattlefields

The Commando landings at Sword Beach of 1 Special Service Brigade, we followed the attacks at Casino & Ouistreham before them on to Benouville, over Pegasus and Horsa Bridges as they pushed to Amfreville and the Breville Ridge.

Then/Now of the edge of Pointe du Hoc. September 2021 and Today. A good third of the Pointe is gone. Looks very weak now. Not sure it will go through the next winter.

Lets take a look at the battle of Breville in June '44, in reality this would be the frontline on the left flank till Operation Paddle at the end of August. Lets set the scene from 7 June, the 1 Special Service Brigade (Commandos) along with the 6 Airborne Div holding the line.

A brilliant view of the 6th Airlanding Brigade arriving over Sword on the evening of 6 June 1944. In the foreground is HMS Serapis of the 23rd Destroyer Flotilla: that morning she had bombarded strongpoint Trout at Lion-sur-Mer.

This is WN 241 and the German occupied French fort called Le Fort de Digosville, east of Cherbourg. The Germans had commanding views of the Bay of Bretteville. This Leistand had two levels of observation with impressive masonry stone work! Photo set here: bit.ly/2LOULir
