In the tapestry of humanity, the threads of justice must weave a fabric that uplifts women's rights, for this strengthens the very essence of human dignity.

📌Safety Is Not a Luxury: Uganda Must Fund GBV Shelters! In today’s 9th December 2025 edition of the New Vision (@newvisionwire), Ms. Rita H. Aciro-Lakor, the Executive Director of the Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET), highlights the indispensable role of GBV shelters in safeguarding survivors of Gender Based Violence (GBV). She stresses that discontinuing their operations due to a lack of prioritization in funding would leave women and girls with no safe spaces to seek protection, emergency care, or psychosocial support. Ms. Aciro calls upon the Government of Uganda @GovUganda to ensure continued functionality of these shelters through adequate and sustained budget allocations, noting that they are a critical component of the national response to Violence Against Women and Girls. For the full details, be sure to grab today’s copy of The New Vision. epapers.visiongroup.co.ug

Minister @BalaamBarugahar , I have just watched a video in which victims who were sexually abused by tycoon Karim Hirji claim that you are trying to silence them and dismiss their allegations as baseless and untrue. If this is true, then you are a huge disappointment to the ministry you represent. How can you , a father and a leader — remain silent when multiple people are courageously coming forward to point at one man? How can you attempt to silence the voices of those who are suffering? Where is your heart? Come out immediately and issue a clear public statement on this matter. Let the world know exactly where you stand. The world is becoming a dangerous place when the very people who are supposed to protect children are the ones abusing or protecting the abusers. It is simply not credible that more than ten victims would all be lying about the same individual. We demand that you speak out on this issue now.

While we may seem divided by borders, different cultures & experiences, we share similar challenges and aspirations. Learning from my sisters across the region showed me that true change comes when we work together for peace, resilience, & women’s leadership. @IGADsecretariat

This week, UWONET had the honour of participating in a cross-border Women and Peace Initiative Exchange hosted by @IGADsecretariat, bringing together women peacebuilders from across the IGAD region. They shared experiences, explored collaborative approaches to conflict, and highlighted the vital role women play in peace and community resilience despite often being excluded from formal peace processes. Women’s resilience, regional solidarity, and capacity building are key to sustaining women-led initiatives and advancing the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda. @xubbifarah #WomenLeadPeaceFollows #IGAD

Ms. Hope Kabuchu has highlighted some of the factors contributing to dwindling funding for WROs, including; wars such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict & Middle East crises shifting focus, COVID-19 impacts, and …nationalism leading funders to draw resources inward, among others. 📌To address these challenges, some of the strategies discussed have included: personal lifestyle changes to address burnout and stress, joint donor engagement, adjusting to development partners' prioties while aligning with institutional mandates, inclusion of grassroots organisations in mobilization, institutional capacity building, government partnerships, engaging in sustainable business models, crowdfunding joint investments amongst others.

My participation at this incredible side event has been invaluable in learning about the experiences & innovative interventions undertaken by various actors in advancing the WPS agenda.@jica_direct @jica_direct_en @UN_Women @WorldBank #TICAD9

Today, UWONET was honoured to serve as panel discussants at the 9th Edition of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), during a side event hosted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) @jica_direct and co-hosted by UN Women @UN_Women and @WorldBank The discussion explored innovative approaches to advancing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda globally. Key takeaways: ✅️Women and girls, most affected by conflict, are powerful agents of change whose voices must be amplified and participation strengthened to drive transformation. ✅️ Unity and collective action is vital in advancing the WPS agenda ✅️Innovation is born once issues that affect women, and girls are approached with a gender lens. #women #TICAD9 #WPS
