@Telegraph I'm wondering what all the fuss is about global rupture. The @cofe is in accord with the UK's enlightened approach to women priests. Similarly, same sex couples. In both cases, they are doing no harm. The Bible was written in times when men were superior and women very much not!

@giles_fraser I read his obituary today. Sadly, good people are only remembered for a couple of things. In his case, encountering Joanna Lumley in the Palace of Westminster over settling ex-Gurka soldiers in the UK. RIP Phil Woolas

So sorry to hear about Phil Woolas. He was an old drinking buddy of mine. Many an hour we would while away in the pub in Kennington talking politics and doing the crossword. Terrific company. He will be much missed.

@WalkerMarcus Working in the private sector, if a deadline was at risk, then action would be taken to minimise the risk of delay/failure. Meanwhile, MPs can only whinge about other people delaying. No evidence of mucking in to get it over the line. 2/2 #AssistedSuicide #AssistedDying

@WalkerMarcus I looked at the Parliament website for key dates, there were none. No indication of when this session of Parliament ends, and the State Opening afterwards. Supporters have been wittering about it falling, with no indication of target dates. How can anything be planned? 1/2

I have to say, the reaction on here to Archbishop Sarah’s pilgrimage is very disappointing. First of all, the facts: she is breaking her pilgrimage to attend the Lords to vote on the abortion amendments, which obviously took some organisation because the pilgrimage was long planned and the date of the Lords debate only announced on Friday.

Tweet your Bishop to stop abortion up to birth! On Wednesday, the UK House of Lords could vote to legalise abortion FOR ANY REASON UP TO BIRTH. So far, we have heard almost nothing from the Church of England bishops on this. Please tweet your bishop/diocese below and check that they will be attending and voting no! And RT!! To our daughter’s for a Mother’s Day meal. The 5-y-o beckoned me secretly into the kitchen, opened a cupboard and whispered “Grandad, this is where we keep the cereal in case you don’t like Daddy’s cooking.” Daddy’s cooking was excellent.

@purgstallheath On the theme of your amusing tweet, when she enters her Cathedral on 25Mar, perhaps if she were wearing hiking boots, rucksack snd other serious walking gear. And then leave the service duly robed. Few would forget the contrast, and the Supreme Governor would love it!

When I asked parishioners what changes they would like to see to the church building over the next 5 years I admit that the introduction of a drinks cabinet to each pew was not high on my list.

@Tanni_GT Many disabled I know have the attitude of what life's given them. A friend has the attitude of just getting on with what he wants to do. He has worked for the civil service for many years.

Those who want to change the law keep using the word suffering. In summing up today Lord Falconer talked about disabled people who ‘suffer from’ …. See why some disabled people are worried.

The demands of modern life are so demanding that many find it nearly impossible to pursue knowledge once they reach working age or get married. What struck me a few days ago was a story someone told me about Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (one of the four major schools of Islamic jurisprudence). He didn't marry until he was forty! He spent those years seeking knowledge, and it's said he memorized nearly a million hadiths! Studying and learning is best done during the teenage years up to the age of forty, and whoever wastes it wastes his life.

Clergy sabbaticals are not simply about recovering from busyness. They are about taking the time to draw close to God, study the scriptures, to learn and then to return to ministry refreshed and renewed. And, yes, more people should have sabbaticals!

@purgstallheath @2D0XPS When I started my career with a bank in 1973, the manager was Mr, everybody else was by their Christian name. In some branches, women used title or first name. By the time I retired 4 years ago, everyone was called by their Christian name.

I'm not advocating for everyone to start calling me Fr Heaton, but I do think it's interesting that culturally if you go to hospital the doctors/surgeons are Dr/Mr Surname, but not in the ‘hospital for sinners’. What does it say about the administration of the ‘cure of souls’?
Daniel Heaton@2D0XPS

@GordonFbpe @chinmj I know of only a tiny no who go by Mr/Fr/Dr/Canon Surname (the general trend for informality and also the deprofessionalisation of the clergy). Senior clergy will say, “Please don't call me Mr/Mme Archdeacon,” but they're the same gen who say, “Oh no, Mr Smith is my father.”

@revpaulwhite Sabbaticals seem to be only available to CofE clergy, but you may correct me. Either way, they seem to be an unnecessary luxury in an organisation that pleads poverty and is content to leave priests in parishes overworked. Not available elsewhere; time for review, perhaps?

Ironically, whilst I am absolutely in favour of clergy sabbaticals, I have not actually had one in 17 years. This time, 6 years ago, I was due to go to Kenya, Tanzania and Liberia for 12 weeks, travelling with Mission Aviation Fellowship, photographing and writing about their work. I did the security training, had loads of jabs and had my tickets for the flight to Kenya. Sadly, it was March 2020 and lock down happened the week before I was due to go, so that was that.

@NickTorfaen This is totally untrue. The current cohort of Labour MPs are lazy and their attitude is entitled. No better evidence than their attitude to the Assisted Suicide Bill. Further, David Lammy thinking jury trials will resolve the backlog in the criminal courts. Do your job properly!

Yesterday the final stages of the Bill to remove hereditary peers concluded. Parliament should be a place where talents are recognised. It should never be a place where titles handed out centuries ago hold power over the people. I’m proud to have delivered this manifesto pledge.

The hereditary were the last link to historical meaning of the chamber - and idea of a House of “Lords”. The last peers were also some of the most hard-working, public spirited and committed members - particular on non-urban issues. Their removal needs now to lead to a much more fundamental rethink of the composition of the House - appointments focused on merit and independence not political patronage.
James Heale@JAHeale

News: the Hereditary Peers Bill has tonight finally passed the Lords, ending centuries of tradition. Expect a handful of life peerages for a smattering of hereds.
