@eyeveethedog @LeahLundqvist Its good in the same way a mechanical excavator is better then a shovel. It allows humanity as a species to do more with the scarce commodity of human time.

@arthurianmaiden @jnsulz In the uk given p45; you can be fired for basically any reason during your probationary period (first 6 months of employment), with the exception of protected characteristics... like pregnancy.

@jnsulz Wait what country is this where it's legal to fire people without a reason? If you did this in Germany or Italy you would be rich for life after having sued your employer

@MrnllMtt Pretty much every FIRE advocate will tell you to focus on increasing income first and decreasing expenses only where they are wasteful. And "retire" is often shorthand for "go into fiscally unrewarding work (e.g. Charity, research, etc.) or a specific goal (travel, etc.)

The ultimate irony of the FIRE movement is that the personality type required to achieve it makes actually retiring impossible: if you possess what it takes to accumulate enough capital to entirely exit the economy by age forty, you are definitely not the kind of person who can spend the next four decades sitting quietly on a porch doing nothing. You are simply substituting the corporate hamster wheel with an ascetic religion of extreme frugality, trading the best years of your life for a hypothetical future, while completely ignoring the structural reality that increasing your income is infinitely easier than cutting your baseline expenses to zero. Money is only useful when spent.
Boring_Business@BoringBiz_

The FIRE (financial independence retire early) movement has done an immense amount of harm to society This is coming from someone who used to be a believer in FIRE, but I have realized just how much of a fallacy it is, as I have grown older Taking a bunch of high potential income earners and convincing them that their life goal should be to pursue a net worth that allows them to check out of society is immensely damaging to the social fabric Many of these people sit on the upper echelon of office jobs, have built great businesses, or are at the top of their field in their career field They should be inspired to continue doing what they are best at, and ultimately, mentor and give back to the next generation who want to pursue those same goals Instead, many of these FIRE folks become wandering retirees with a meaningless life who are trying to grasp on to money as their north star It is a false sense of security and accomplishment. Becoming wealthy should never be a goal in the first place. It should have always been to pursue something that adds meaning to your own life and to society It is a completely fallacy to believe that retiring will be your source of happiness. More often than not, it has the complete opposite effect

@minase8213 @mert The european parliament cannot propose legislation, only vote on legislation posted by European Commission.

@mert weird question but can it not be done the other way around too? like, having a vote to get rid of chat-control, and make it so the Majority has to vote if they want to keep it. how the hell is this even a "democratic" process there is so much wrong with this system

mass surveillance is coming > first 5 votes fail > have another vote > invoke technicality to require majority to vote AGAINST rather than requiring majority to vote FOR > do it when everyone's on vacation so not enough numbers to vote against demonic creatures
Fidias Panayiotou@Fidias0

CHAT CONTROL IS COMING Even though most Members of the European Parliament have voted to REJECT Chat Control, we have not been able to reach the absolute majority that was needed (361 Members). This is a sad day for Europeans.

@peterrhague This seems fine? Price it 2% below market, get rid of it quickly, move to a place you can afford. You don't have to massively under value for an institutional investor to snap it up.

This is a terrible idea. Predatory investors would hunt out people who don’t have the means to pay high tax, forcibly buy their homes for below market rate, and then sell them at a markup or collect rent from the newly dispossessed owners.
Rory Sutherland@rorysutherland

There is an easy solution. Everybody declares what their house is worth, but anyone else is then allowed to buy the house at that price. You then reduce that figure by 25%, and you have a reasonably accurate valuation. That's how the Danish Crown used to tax cargo passing through the Oresund Strait.

Often I have had to call up some companies support and yearned for this comic to be reality One time there was an issue with my online banking where I could see what the problem was, but it took me over 4 hours and like 6 people to get to someone technical enough to fix it

Toby 🛩️@303SnowWolf

Letting luddites on the internet was a huge mistake just for what it did for the tech support experience - you roll in with "hi, I'm getting 600mbps down through your gateway but only 5mpbs up" and they hit you with "so what is the issue?"

@thomasnet_mc @catgirlprostate That and "owning a non-negligible amount of stock and calling up investor relations about how this damages your trust in the company". Although you need the right social signals for this to appear credible.

@Jameswise This is in no way equivalent to an MRI. A new type of full body scan is incredibly useful, but it is a new type of scan not a replacement for MRI scans.

@hankgreen Huh, my impression from the promos was "oh cool a new type of scan with the same domain as MRI/CT" not "oh cool a replacement for MRI/CT".More ways of scanning the same domain seem great, but yeah it definitely isn't a replacement and they should be careful not to omply othereise

@linusgsebastian @hankgreen Everyone talking about buy borrow die when that was largely a ZIRP and a bit of a meme even under zero interest rates. And taxing capital gains exactly as income is plainly unreasonable because of inflation anyway, even if you don't want lower rates to encourage investment.

@MattLCapon What, the two manufacturers of mobile operating systems? Would be trivial to mandate apple and google include a child safe mode which parents can turn on before giving their child a phone.

Nope, sorry Nigel that won't work and here's why. Restricting platforms means dealing with a relatively small number of services. Restricting handsets potentially means involving manufacturers, operating system developers, mobile networks, retailers and parents. At that point you're no longer debating social media. You're debating what a smartphone for a child should be allowed to do, which feels like an even bigger policy and commercial challenge.
Nigel Farage@Nigel_Farage

Whilst the social media ban is well-intentioned, it’s unlikely to work given the mass adoption of VPNs. It will also mean the introduction of Digital ID via the back door. The real answer here is handsets for children with limited features.

@LinkofSunshine The solution is trivial and almost already in use? The tickets are worth 10-50k so the organisers should charge 10-50k, not horrendously underprice and allow third party resellers to profit

There isn’t. There is a capacity of 20,000 and 20,000,000 people who want to see it. Even if you randomly lotteried them, 99.9% of people can’t ever go to a finals game Watch it on TV

@DanielVarg81627 @PunishedGramsci Do you think calories you drink just don't count? If you're not just drinking water and sugar free soda and you're trying to maintain weight, you do have to eat less food to compensate. For most of history humans have not drunk exclusively water and sugar free soda.
