This is well worth your time. I have always been an advocate, even when it's morally difficult, for talking to terrorists. From a P/CVE perspective, it's a crucial way to understand motivations and build a response to keep people above ground who otherwise would be statistics.

What really angers me about this is that I spoke at LWS, said nothing controversial, yet was treated like a witch to be burned at the stake. I was called a Nazi, a bigot, a transphobe. I was threatened. My life was turned upside down by people I knew and considered friends. It still feels unbelievable. And yet these same people platformed and celebrated this deviant. Make it make sense

@MAMBarLife No need to apologise. I can't see this being possible but if the judge was restricted by law (as opposed to guidelines which he could depart from) then the law must be changed. Given his remarks, I suspect the latter. But we will see if the UL scheme produces a different result.

@NotThatBigIan Apologies didn’t mean to (wo)mansplain. But please remember youth justice law seems to change every quarter and that sentencing guidelines have altered the landscape of sentencing irrevocably. You will know too what steps have to be taken before a s250 detention can be imposed.

Does the sentence fit the crime? Youth Rehabilitation Orders with ISS is the most severe sanction available before limited custody. That IMO does not fit with the harm done & the calculated depravity of the offending & no mitigation could abate that. Trust in the system is tanking.

Having been Head of Region for the YJB in the South West, Mary, I'm pretty au fait with the youth justice system and the specific ways it fails. I don't need to read guidelines to know this disposal was manifestly unjust, unless you're tying to argue the judge was compelled to deliver that specific sentence.

Hi Emily, it’s the Equality Act that says single sex services can’t admit people of the opposite sex. The Code of Practice simply explains it to service providers. If you want services organised on the basis of gender identity not sex you need to advocate for a change in the law. There’d be a lot of opposition to that (including from me) because of the impact on women, including domestic abuse survivors. Happy to put you in touch with a specialist lawyer if you want to know more about the relationship between the law and guidance.
